Looking for stereo and speaker recommendations

Just bought a pre-owned 2004 SR5. It has the low level stock stereo. While I love the rest of this wonderful SUV, the stereo has gotta go. Not wanting to spend a ton of money, but I plan to replace the two 6" speakers up front and the stereo console. Looking for recommendations. Stereo needs to stay under $250.

My wife drives our Acura MDX. While the stereo console was fine, the speakers sucked. I replaced them with Infinity speakers and it sounded like I installed an entire new stereo system. I fear, however, that Infinity speakers alone cannot improve the 4Runner stereo.

the front door speakers are actually 6x9s.. yeah, i know, weird.. anyways, speakers would make a big difference in any application, imo. but would be better if powered by a better head unit.

as for the head unit, i'd suggest looking into alpine or eclipse. i'm sure you could find something that would fit your price range.

You have to do a lot retrofitting to the OEM speakers, as they are molded into large speaker adaptors. I cut my speakers out of the adaptors and modified the adaptors to fit six-inch rounds, for both front & read doors. This and the Scion stereo made it very reasonable for me as far as money and overall quality. For higher end quality, an aftermarket HU will also allow you to input & output additional devices in an easier way. There are some nice detailed threads here, involving speaker mods and and instrument panel removal.

Ive got Alpine 6x9 Type S fronts and 6.5" typeS rears powered by the stock T4R head unit. It sound dramatically better than the stock setup but considering that the Scion head units are under 200 bucks installed (if you can get a used HU off line for a decent price) you can increase the capability of the stock system quite alot that way.

If you want to stay with the factory look, it is possible to install the SCION head unit. The SCION unit pumps out more amps and sounds better (from what I've read on this board) as well as being able to play MP3s/Support XM. The single disc units can be found for around $100 and the 6Disc in dash unit for sub $250.

Anyone know if this HU is compatable with an iPod? I see that it plays MP3s, but what does that mean exactly?

Read the thread in the top of this section. THe T1809 reguires a cable, $20, that connects to the cack of the HU. You can then run the cable to your glovebox or console.

Mine just arrived at home and is awaiting installation. By this time tomorrow it should be in!!
