Looking into buying

Hey I am looking into buying a 1993 4Runner and i just want to know what you may think. As I said its a 93 it has 11300 miles on it, manual, 4x4, has minor wear in the seats, and minor rust except for at the rear wheel wells where there is a spot about 1-2 inches in diameter thats almost thru on each side. Aside from that the overall shape is probably what you would expect for a 93. The tires are dry rotted and need replaced and the rims are aftermarket american racing but the polished finish has dulled to a greyish color. It runs good. He is asking $4000 for it. Does this seem to be a good price for the vehicle based on your experience with them?

It kind of sounds like it has been sitting for a while (low miles with worn seats, dry-rotted tires).

What does the oil and other fluids look like? Look for moisture in the oil, rust on the dipstick, oxidation on the intake (it is aluminum and should not look like it is covered with white mold).

You may be able to chew it down a bit based on the rust and tires. Look under it, hows the frame and body mounts? If these are rusted, walk away. If not, and the fluids and such check out fine, it may be decent. I would sure want to know why the miles are so low. (long sitting vehicles can cost you big replacing gaskets, seals and bearings that went dry!)

But: if it all looks good, Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) lists this rig for $4060 private party. I would try to chew it down 500 bucks for tires.

It could be a decent rig, so look it over carefully and let us know!

I would say that is a bit high..but, I am in colorado and there are litterally hundreds of em in the paper.

I have checked out quite a few 94-96's with 100-150K ish on the clocks in mint condition...no rust one owners etc....

People just basically get on the highway and commute to work to denver in them...one road, no lights.

All for approx. 4-8K...97's a bit higher, but not much.

Michigan though, rust is inevitable with a classic T4R as you know.

I am thinking of driving one back to michigan for easter for my brother inlaw if you want to check it out for future purchases.

they live in Clarkston MI. not far from you :-)

The frame and body mounts are in good shape, that was one of the first things we looked at. the engine is in good running shape and the fluids are all ok. As for the rust on the wheel wells, it doesnt really bother me, in PA im used to rust on my vehicles. the tires are a concern tho. I may offer him 3500 or 3700 and see if he will take it. If not i may be looking for a different one.
