Looking Roof Rack

Hey guys I have a 98 4runner. I am looking a roof rack. I don't have any rails. All I have is a black strip on each side. Will another gerneration work? It doesn't have to be OEM but I am thinking I have to have the rails to get anything else to mount up there? I have searched ebay and craigslist to death.

Look it up on here, theres a few people that have made peices to attach a cage just to those strips. So you dont have to have the cross members. I'm sure some others will chime in with some better details.

That's a good suggestion but he is keeping the side rails with the end caps. That is what the cross bars mount to.

I have added an OEM roof rack to my girlfriends 3rd gen. Her's had the black strips the OP is talking about. They come off and are replaced by the side rails with end caps.
I found the one I used for her's off of a wrecked one I found on good ole' craigslist for $40.

thanks guys for posting. The little black strips are not the ones that are part of the roof rack. I don't know where they came from. You can see the paint fade where the roof rack used to be before I bought it.
 
Picture of the black strips and/or the faded paint?
If you're talking about what I think you are, they can be removed and the roof rack goes in the same place, holes and all fit.
 
I, too, am in the same boat as the OP. No factory roof rack, only the little "placeholder" strips. I would love to add a rack, and they can still be bought from Toyota as an "accessory" for about $250. Just haven't ordered up yet. Hate to buy the whole thing, since all I need is the roof mounts as a base for an aftermarket rack. Guess I should take a hard look at creating my own bases...couldn't be that hard for a guy with a wire feed, could it? :)
 
I'm telling you guys, look on craigs list for a 4R being parted out and jump on the roof rack. I bought one for $40, much better than $250.
 
Well besides you being a Tarheel fan ( wolfpack 4 life ) I figured I would show this guys link that I recently purchased my roof rack from. I hope im reading your thread right and seeing all you have is the 2 strips on top of the roof if so then thats all you need for these roof racks. I have pics of mine being made on this post as well hope it helps you ( he has cheap prices too )
