Looking to build a wheeler

Just like everyone else on this forum, I love 4runners. I am looking to build a wheeler and use a 4runner body and frame. Not too concerned to find that yet, but at the moment I am more concerned with running gear.

Has anyone put land cruiser axles on a 4runner? I found a fj60 for $850, but would those axles be too long? I also have found 2 fj40's that are rolling tubs, for $1400. Would those axles be the right length, or too short? No specific reason i am looking at cruisers, except i have found these ones for cheap and know they have really strong axles.

Sorry if these are frequently asked or "noob" questions. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the highly technical answer to these questions is...tape measure (LOL). Anything can be adapted, so if you have direct access to these rigs, go do some measuring. It wouldn't hurt if they stuck out a little, but definitely don't go narrower (I doubt that would be the case, though--the FJ40 is probably close to the same overall width). And you can find out the gearing they have by comparing the turns of the driveshafts to the turns of the wheels, since you've already mentioned you need to step up your ratio for those tires. Info I've found...

Skip the fj40 axles. They're narrower and the earlier model's have drum brakes. Has a different steering setup (I think the fj60 is different too) so you'd have to do a cross over steering setup.

fj60 axles on the other hand are wider and stronger than the 8" setup.

I'm far from an expert but hope some of this info helps!

A mini truck axle with 30 splines is pretty strong and going to be cheaper to build up than an FJ axle.

i concur, dirty 30 or longfield upgrades are the way to go. a lot of guys around here run tires in the 40" size on yota axles and haven't had problems.

Dont mark me on this, but i believe most fj's have offset rear axles. I 99% sure for 40's and 80's but not too sure about 60's

X3 on a mini Toy axle thats what I'm running on my runner. I'm only running 35's at the moment but on past trucks I have run 38 TSL's and never had any issues. Plus in a couple weeks I'll have a front axle for sale with an open set of 4.88's :cheers: Your runner is almost done man! I'd just slap some RUF leafs and a mini axle and call it done. Nice rig man!
