http://www.top4runners.com/ do some research on his site ... that will give you most of the year to year changes to see what you might be missing or gaining going w/ one year over another.
Check for new timing belts. I just bought a '97 2 days ago, and saw that there were new belts, which is great because I have been told that they are expensive.
Check for the obvious stuff, also check for the lighting panel where your HVAC is. My electronics seem to be broken at the moment. Working on fixing that.
I was thinking that the next time I buy a car, I am going to try driving it during the day and at night. there are things that become more apparent and necessary during both times. Good Luck!

Time belt like the above poster said would be the most important. After that would be water pump (normally done at the same time as the timing belt), rear axel seals, and just the normal stuff.

Ditto on the timing belt. If I recall, it's an every 90,000 mile maintenance item and worthwhile to do the water pump at the same time (but not necessary) since the front of the engine needs to be partly torn down to do both.
There a few TSB's, the most notable ones I can think of are for the front rotors warping and fuel gauge issues, both of which should be obvious when you test drive.
