Looking to buy a Forester or 4Runner

r32's have astronomical price tags, i can probably buy 2 B6 a4's and still have money for parts before i can get a single r32, lol

a simple gti with a 2.0 should be good enough to save me gas and be comfy enough.

This is true. I was just thinking you could use the r32 for wintery conditions as well, but DUH!! what's the T4R for then? lol

I had a MKIV GTI GLX. Biggest POS I ever owned, save for a '78 Pontiac. It was at the dealer 11 times in the first 12 months.

Stay far away from MK IV Golfs and Jettas.

i figure just get a MKIV gti 2.0L non turbo, slow as sh*t, great on gas, and for repairs i can do it myself or i have a buddy with a Vdub shop so no worries in that department. lol

Why do you want an unreliable car that will have you forever chasing electronic gremlins? A Golf 2.slow won't be fun to drive, so what is the point?

If you want a cheap, reliable car that gets good mileage, then buy a Honda or
Toyota.

Here in NY, hondas get stolen and usually targeted by cops so they get pulled over left and right, a VDUB on the other hand, noone bothers with. I just want something to drive manual with, i've been driving manual since i was 17, now i'm 30 and can't seem to get used to not driving manual.

Honda Fit manual. Done.

Here are some of the things that had to be replaced on my 2000 GTI in the first three years:

- turn signal stalk
- starter motor
- plugs, plug wires, coil pack
- AC condenser
- thermostat
- rear shocks and shock top mounts twice, and they needed it when I sold it at 40,000 miles.
- more lightbulbs than you can shake a stick at. It always had a burned out light somewhere.
- rear brakes at only 20k miles
- dash lights would periodically flash off momentarily.

I'm sure there is more, but that is all I can remember at the moment.

As for the manual transmission, it really wasn't that great. You couldn't hurry it or 2nd gear would grind. Honda transmissions are far better.

LOL here the front and rear lip would most likely get stolen as well as the wheels. Thats what sucks when you live in a good neighborhood. The thieves from the hood come by and jack shit, i remember seeing a 350z with volks get the wheels stolen (a block away from me), a few STI's got taken about 10 blocks from me, a maxima get its wheels stolen like 3 times in 2 years. And even stock civics get stolen because people use the parts IE fenders, hood, bumpers, interior etc. Get a euro, never have to worry about that.

Your idea of a good neighborhood is clearly different than mine.

There hasn't been a car theft in my town in years.

new york is totally different than MA, my ex lived in worcester, in a OK neighborhood, out there the honda kids arent as crazy as they are here. I run a "speed shop" and hear all these things from these honda kids that make me not wanna get one. thats pretty much it.
As far as the Vdub, I have a buddy with a Vdub shop, so i dont really have to worry about anything since he will mostlikely have it laying around and i wont have to pay much or anything at all (plus i get to use the lifts and tools whenever for whatever i want to do).
 
I have had both Toyota 4runner and Subaru Forrester. I do all the work on my own cars, so I can't comment on the service. As far as reliability, assuming things are maintained properly, I can say with certainty that the Toyota will break less often. That being said, the Subaru is generally easier to work on so repair costs will most likely be less expensive.
