Looking to buy

I'm looking to buy probably a 99-02 4runner soon and was wondering if there is anything I should be looking for. Like timing belt being replaced or other maintenance issues, I'm new to 4runners so any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes if the mileage is over 90K then the timing belt and water pump should have been done. Look for sticker on the front of motor top plastic casing. Axle seals are a common failure on the 3rd gen Runners.

Overall look for a one owner vehicle if possible that has kept very detailed files on work performed. Your choices are narrowed if you want the 5 speed manual-those ended in 2000. Likewise if you want the 4 cylinder, also ended in 2000.(maybe 99 I always forget)

Yeah, I just bought mine last week and had asked the same question. I was looking for one with a rear locker but ended up just going with one that had a timing belt change and all maintenance done and documented by the dealership. I'd say the timing belt change, a clean carfax/autocheck, and just making sure its overall in good shape.

And also know that 01-02 means VSC which means electronic throttle control which means a delay in response. Bothers the hell out of me.

Don't be too quick to pass up a good '96-98 either. So the center console is different and the bumper doesn't stick out like a fat lip, who cares?
