Looking to mount a 285/55/20 tire on the roof, what do I need?

basket? straps? I want to do it right. I kinda want some sort of deflector too so things dont beat it up and wind doesnt constantly hit it. Im sure its not a major loss of MPG, but every bit counts!!! Any ideas?

PS: I WAS going to put some sort of cargo container up there that would fit a snowboard (in a bag), but I guess thats out now right? I cant see how that would work now. Unless I can fit a 285/55/20 nitto terra grappler under the back bumper which i highly doubt

that tire wont fit in the spare tire spot under the bumper. you have some options though:

Cargo Rack: safari, thule, yakima, of anything like that and strap the tire in the basket.

It depends on your definition of major loss. You will definitely see a negative impact to your MPG with a basket.

I do not have the basket, but I use ski rack when going skiing. With Barrecrafters rack loaded with 2 pairs of skis and a snowboard I loose between 1 and 1.5 mpg.

i drive like an animal as it is, so 1mpg is negligible.

I dont want a jack mount or anything like that, just the cheapest cleanest least invasive way to mount it safely. I'll check into the baskets

Why

In addition to the drag it creates, that's a good bit of weight way up high, sure not good for your COG.

Not to sway you away from your original plan,but i agree with the previous post.That size tire and wheel is probably in excess of 100lbs,if you can afford to lose cargo room in the rear,i would suggest ratchet strapping the tire down in the back.Or you could consider a hitch mounted tire carrier,like this CBI model. http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/

That's actually what I do with mine. Helps lower my COG, and that's real important to me.
I was going to build a bumper mounted carrier like the one in the pic above, but with a 36" tire it completely blocked the rear window.
