I'm in the beginning stages of looking into trading my 2012 CrewMax 5.7 Tundra in for a 5th gen T4R. Looking at both the limited and the Trail models. I come over from TundraTalk.net where I was a very active member.
My reasons for wanting to switch over from the Tundra i'll list here:
- I don't tow anything.
- I don't haul anything in the bed. (other than camping and fishing gear, which will easily fit in the T4R folding down the 3rd row and adding a sweet roof rack.
- I will soon be commuting a lot further to work. (I estimate saving $80 a week on gas)
- Financial: It doesn't make much sense to be paying extra in gas, insurance and monthly payments (my research shows I should drop my payment by about $50 a month switching to a T4R). All for a truck that I don't utilize to its full potential... sure having big truck is sweet, but i've seen some T4r's on here that look even better (imo) with some 33's, and a sweet roof rack.
- The trunk space will be excellent for my duty and other miscellaneous gear that I have to put on the back seat of my crewmax and move around every time I have more than 2 people in my vehicle.
Put it all together, I just feel like I'm paying all this money for a truck that I use to only 1/10th of it's potential. Everything I've read actually says that the T4R would be better offroading for my fishing/shooting/snowboarding trips. All in all, it seems like a better choice.
This is all assuming I wont take too much of a financial hit. Yes, I understand I will never make money trading in a vehicle, but in no way did I get a "deal" on the Tundra like I thought. I owe less than the trade in value and I think I should be able to get into a certified preowned trail/limited and lower my monthly payments a tad along with lowering my interest rate to save me money in the long run.
