I have an 87 and 2010 so i am thinking of getting a 4th gen. but the thing is do i want or need the v8? just wondering the cost of owner ship versus the 4.0. for fuel mileage and does the 4th gen have the factory e-locker, and does the v8 limited full time 4wd or selectable. thanks for the help.

This is an ongoing debate that has been hashed over many times in previous threads. You can read through literally hundreds of pages about this debate by using the search function. Both engines have there advantages but I can't say there is any kind of consensus about which is best. Good luck in your decision.

I'll give it a go:

Do you want a V8? YES

Do you need a V8? No

Cost of ownership? You'll get a couple less MPG with the V8 of course. Also, the V8 uses a timing belt that requires maintenance so you can factor that into cost of ownership.

The only 4th Gen with that factory e-locker is the ultra rare 2009 Trail Edition, which you will not find with a V8.

The V8 4WD's are all full-time regardless of trim level. There are dedicated 2WD V8's however.

I am a mechanic so i will change the timing belt if i get one either way. and i found a 04 limited v8 black 165k for 8100. think im gonna jump on that. the guy says it has a selector switch for the 4wd?

But yes, there is a selector switch. It let's you toggle from 4HI to 4LO. On a V6 you also have a 2HI position. Hope that helps.
