Looking to Switch to Synthetic

No experience w/ that brand, but Wal-Mart sells several types at a very good price. I'm running Penzoil Platinum Ultra right now. I'll change it soon right at 10k miles and send off an oil sample. From what I've read our V8's are very easy on the oil and you can go 10-15k with a good quality sythetic and high capacity filter. Good luck w/ your switch! Google that oil and you might find some more reading material.

Super tech is "ok" but I run Pennzoil Platinum or QHorsepower syn. A few bucks more but way better oil. Plus you can run the Pennzoil 5-6k easily with absolutely no issues.

The decision is completely with the cost to you.
The Wally - World product does meet all the standards to be used in our vehicles. I feel that it is at least an average product and one of the reasons for its reduced cost is the sheer volume of sales.
That said, you should be more than okay with it..... but I still use Mobil 1

I second that. 103k miles. 5 quart jug at wallie world for $11.50. Toyota filter $5.84. Can't beat that and the truck runs smoooth.

ya, thats where i get it, u cant beat the price for good oil, i use the fram tough guard filter though(mainly for the easy grip
)

Well my last SUV has 304k miles and doesnt burn any oil, always run synthetic in that....

Well I just bought my 4runner to replace it and havent put 200 miles on ina month because I'm still driviing my old SUV. 1997 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4 3.3 auto. Its wearing out but still runs and drives so i put 30 miles a day on it and I'm saving the 4R for when it dies...I would have bought a new path if the new bodystyle didnt look like arse....I put 240k on my 94 civic with synthetic, only sold it because the snow drifts in my driveway at our new house made it impossible to get out and go to work..
You know how some people say, "its worth the extra money" ? in this case it is plus you can go 7k or more if you choose between changes....IMHO

I would love to get that many miles outta my runner, i am starting a new thread.....Synthetic Vs Conventional.....lets see if you guys can convince me.
Mobil-1 in both trucks. I buy it at WallyWorld in 5-qt jugs, 4 at a time when its on sale. I also use Mobil-1 oil filter, M1-209 in 4Runner and and M1-102 in GX470.
All Mobil1 synthetic fluids in 4Runner.
GX470 is going for new tires and oil change on Monday, I'll see if M1-209 will fit there as well. And will replace all fluids with synthetic.

The Switch...
Hey Folks!
Just joined the 4Runner club with the purchase of a '05 SR5 4x4 with about 95000 miles. I am curious about any danger that might come from switching from Conventional to Synthetic at close to 100k miles. Someone once told me that switching like that could damage gaskets and/or seals? I thought that making the switch might help prolong the life of the engine. I will be keeping this for a while!
I've enjoyed reading all the different posts on this site while I was looking for my truck and look forward to learning even more!

You shouldn't have any problems going to synthetic although on rare occasions, the synthetics will dissolve old gum and varnish that had acted as a seal, resulting in a little oil consumption. Going back to dino will remedy that but usually it's not something that would cause a problem; just a nuisance.
Full synthetics will allow you to extend your oil change frequency but from the standpoint of engine longevity, any decent dino oil changed at the correct frequency (typically 3k miles) will provide no less protection than full syn.
I've ran numerous cars over 200,000 miles with dino oil with 3-4k oil changes. I've also ran 3 other vehicles between 150k-200k miles on full synthetic at 10,000 mile changes including my tow vehicles. NONE of those; both the ones on dino and on synthetic; used or burned oil nor had any compression issues. My main reason for going to synthetic was to keep me from getting under the car every 4-6 weeks due to the mileage I was putting on my cars.
Any gain in fuel mileage is minimal, if at all. Changing synthetic at anything less than 8k miles is a waste of your money, IMO.

I use Mobil 1 mostly but Ive also used the sale offbrands a few times and havent noticed any differance.
I had an old chevy beretta with 200+ thousand miles on it when I bought it (first car in highschool) for 600 bucks. My dad always used mobile 1 and I put some in it and it actually quieted down the valvetrain noticeably. My cousin convinced me that synthetic wasn't necessary and I went back to normal cheap oil and the noise came back. After that experience mobile 1 only for me. That's again different than the yota's obviously but that experience sold me. BTW I put 70k more miles on that 600 dollar car over the course of 4 years. Best 600 bucks I've ever spent.
