Looks Like the Water Inlet O Ring....

Got a 4gen

I have had a faint coolant leak that has been coming from what looks to be the water inlet O ring.

Took it to 2 stealerships to confirm and they told me that it was the water pump. Then I took it to almost 3 or more normal mechanics and their conclusion was to be like mine. They all agreed that it was the water inlet O-ring and advised me not to change the pump til 90k, I currently have 83.

I was wondering if anyone else have ran across the same issue. I haven't found any other threads on the "water inlet o ring" and how to change the O-ring. It looks simple enough from the diagram of the assembly. 5 bolts and some hoses.

My question is do I need to use sealant with the O-ring? or just the ring itself?

Do I need to drain out all of my coolant while doing this procedure?
Do I need to remove the radiator for this procedure?

Also, how would I go about checking the tensioners to see if they need replacing???

Thanks

Get some pictures for sure I have a small leak that I noticed when installing my lift. I would like to see if it is in the same place as yours.

Remember that “Some” Old School water pumps had a weep hole designed to allow drops of antifreeze to drip to lubricate the seal/bushings/bearings. This is/was usually at the obvious hole on the bottom front shaft areas of the water pump. It’s so slow that you might not see a stain, drip etc until the seal/bearing are worn. I c/n verify the hole on 07 V6 due to skid plate. jow

Apologies for taking so long. My camera was MIA. :bash:

Here is the photo. what your looking at is where the leak I have found on my truck. It seems to be leaking really slowly, this build up is after around 3-4weeks.

Above the serpentine belt is where the inlet is, i had to tuck the camera around from a radiator hose and the water inlet to get the photo. There does not appear to be any coolant leaks from the pump.

Please tell me if anyone else has encountered this same issue, if so, is the leak from the water inlet?

What is the correct procedure on changing the O-ring if this is the issue?

THANKS

What is the cost of a new pump, new pump replaced, estimated time involved (3 items)? I feel the Dealer’s mechanics are saying you d/n pull the pump @83,000 w/o changing it. That is logical IMO but it could go 150,000 +. Remember that some people would trade vs having a pump replaced. When I wrenched, I would go for just the “O” ring now if it were a simple one hr or less job. Plus, I have used many lifetime rebuilt pumps etc 70s – 80s (simple then vs now) if they were quick easy jobs. I feel your question and challenge will be cost vs time.

I h/n replaced this pump. Have you felt the bolts in the direct area to see if you can “lightly” tightened them? If you feel metal to metal STOP!

Good Luck, jow

:redbrick: OK

so after more observance, I pushed some of the crust out of the way to see the seal on the water inlet. the seal and he connection between the engine are tight with no leaks. Looks like the leak is spraying up, probably from the water pumo leak hole on the top... As the Chilton guide has stated " Time for a new pump...."

Now my questions to someone that has the knowledge. I know this has been discussed, but I have specifics....

1. Other than replacing the water pump, tensioner, thermostat, and serp. belt...what else is necessary to change out since I am down there?

2. Pretty comfortable changing out the water pump myself.... BUT. Maybe an obvious question. I notice that in order to take out the water pump... I have to take the a/c compressor out, but in order for me to do that I would have to discharge the compressor. Anyway of doing this without going to the mechanics?

3. I recently changed my belt twice, the second time I think the coolant ruined the belt and it snapped, luckily I was at a stop making a right.
No that I changed it coolant has once again gotten on the belt, The belt looks as though there might be future wear going along the belt that might cause future tear, not so sure though, maybe that how its suppose to look ha... Should I just save time and energy and switch out the belt once again???

Thanks in advanced for any Constructive knowledge!

any real techs out there? :redbrick:

What's that supposed to mean? :hiding:

Anyways, other than what you listed, I would go ahead and do a coolant flush since you're going to partially drain it anyways. Not much else you need to do off the top of my head.

I don't know what your repair manual is telling you, but I have yet to see anyone in our shop pull the A/C compressor completely off to do a water pump.

As for the belt? If you have any doubts why risk it?

Post Note- Sorry for the delay, been busy in life and work, trying to get back to everyone that asks me a question. Lol
