Loose exterior trim piece

Hey folks, I did a few searches on here and yotatech yesterday and didn't find much, so I'm going to bring this one up. I have some exterior rubber trim coming loose on both sides of the windshield trim piece. The pieces that are coming loose are the runners from the roof rack to the bottom of the windshield. I'm wondering if this is normal. I'm still under warranty but I don't want to have to drive to Sioux Falls Toyota dealership if there is an easy fix I can do myself. I will try to post photos but I'm guessing that others have this issue. I don't have a digi camera but can get one if you all really need to see the pics to compare to your own problems. I know what you're talking about. From day one, my rubber trim pieces have had bumps in them just above the windshield. It's as if the trim piece is a little too long, so there's a bump in what would otherwise be a perfect fit for a rubber strip. I assumed it was a design "feature" for some reason (expansion/contraction?), because I can't believe Toyota would make a part fit poorly like that by accident. Both sides are identical, reinforcing the idea that it's intentional.
 
I'm pretty positive that there is a TSB for this. I have it on my 04 too, but I've kept forgetting to bring it up and now I'm out of standard warranty. It's never given me any problems though. If you do a search, you can probably find the TSB for it

If you don't mind me asking: Why not take it to a local dealer? Past bad service experience?

I don't mind you asking at all. I hate going to the stealership. Even when you make an appointment it always takes them forever to do even simple things (at least in the TC area across all toyota stealerships). I have a trusted friend mechanic who is very good and understands domestic and import vehicles very well. I prefer to have him do all non-warranty work for me. Also, I'm a DIY'er so unless its something expensive or nit-picky (like this issue) I do it myself. Oh yeah, I'm also assigned to a small town for work that doesn't have a Toyota dealership. The nearest one is 58 miles away.
Thanks, Toybox for the TSB. I see that its for '03-'04 so I will have to see if the stealership will do it for me. I think they should since I'm under warranty, but service managers like to say something is "normal" unless you have a TSB in hand (engine ticking, driveline clunking, jeez probably many more).:bash:

I believe the TSB continued but this is what I got when I searched TIS for 2003 4Runner. If you want, TIS is $10/day and you will have access to all the TSB's pertaining to your year ALONG with the electrical and repair manuals. Well worth it in my opinion.

I used that service to download a bunch of repair manual pages. It is worth it. In light of that, thanks for sharing!:bowdown:
 
Well, I just got off the phone with Billion Toyota in Sioux Falls, SD. They said there is no TSB for '05's, that they were produced after the bad part was taken care of on the TSB. Well, I don't see it that way. I sent him pictures, will leave work early on Friday (:beer: (j/k)) and go down there and have 'er fixed, although I'm not sure if they will glue the current problem or replace it. Only time and annoying stealership visits will tell!

Mine is identical to the pics. Let us know what they do.

I read the TSB (thanks, toybox!), and I don't think fixing it is worth all that trouble. There are too many other things that need to be removed... it could look worse after the dealer is done!

My 4Runner looks like the pictures as well. Then again my windshield was replaced so the trim might have been damaged by that. My '04 is after the part was replaced during production (IE my VIN is higher that the TSB VIN cutoff) so I am SOL.
 
Same here, mine is popped up like that too. Although not as severe, but it's definately not flush following the sheetmetal slope/curve. On mine the passenger seems to be more lifted than the driver side.

Damn it Toyota, stop trying to be #1 and beating GM at the expense of fit and finish and quality. :bash:
 
Mine is like that as well, but what is the big deal? Other than it doesnt look the greatest its not like it leaks or anything. Too me its not even worth my time to go to the dealer. Just my opinion.
