Loose lower Control arm!?!?!

So I recently jacked up my truck to cut my dust shield to stop this grinding, anyway besides the point so I re-mount my tire and drive to work while driving to work I notice my steering wheel isn't straight on while driving straight... and my ride is super bouncy and I can hear my tires chirping slightly while driving and steering is super sensitive and jumps. I get home to check it out and my tires are super hot on the outside so I jack it back up and wiggle my right tire(passanger) left and right and notice that my LCA is loose in the rear what could have caused this ? It would be unsafe to drive by my standards. What should I do get an alignment? Help Please

Cause, potholes, age, wear, vibration, unbalanced tires, off-roading, the tech that touched it last didn't properly torque it, basically anything etc. The point is you caught it before the wheel fell the f off.

Before we go further, allow me to ask a dumb question; are you sure it's your LCA? I ask becasue theres another wibbly wobbly component in that neighborhood you might feel moving if you're going by the old tire wiggle. When were your lower ball joints last changed? Are you running oversized tires lifted etc? Cut the ball joint interval by a third, off road frequently too boot, halve it.

That out of the way, yes it's definitely unsafe to drive, you know the whole wheels fall off thing etc. If the the lower control arm is loose it more than likely needs an alignment. I would take it to a dealer to do so, or in the very least a well reputed shop. I.E. not a jiffy lube type place. Definitely not the last place that aligned it. Try to go mid morning on a tuesday, that way the techs are fresh, have shed hair of the dog from the weekend and aren't in a rush to get home or tired and forgetful from turning wrenches in the heat all day.

(Edit: Unsafe to drive when loose, tighten that som-betch good and snug and drive over to your favored alignment shop. Have the tech do a good torque check on all the hardware down there too.)

After working for a dealer I can tell you the best way to get poor service is to come in last minute on a Friday. Any time Monday ain't much better, there seems to be a common pass time among techs with lingering effects.

Troybylt Yes it is definitely my lower control arm not balljoint, it is in good shape and yes oversized tires and lifted and so on and so forth. Will get an alignment and get back to you thanks for the quick reply.:p

Hey glad to help, worst case scenario you may need a new misalignment bolt washer and nut for the loose part. Also search here for folks that have tack-welded their alignment in place, tends to keeps things together longer, plus if you run the same brand and size tire and wheel all the time and at every change and rotate often your alignment and wear isn't likely to change enough to warrant grinding off the tack and realigning . Definitely be good and sure it's zero'd in to your likeing before then though. It's nice to know everything is where you left it after a hard trail. Only time your alignment will change is when you seriously bash hard enough to tweak something, but then you have bigger problems then grinding a tack.

Happy trails!

Before you get it aligned check the lower control arm bushings as well in case those are the (common) culprit. I have my son wiggle the steering wheel for me while I'm watching the a-arms, truck off, brake set, 'cause tire tracks make a terrible fashion statement. If it's the bushings it should be super easy to tell.

Well the guys said I couldn't get it aligned due to having play in my inner tie rod and noted steering rack is leaking so I guess I will get new inner tie rod or possibly new steering rack because it supposedly has a life time warrenty and he tightened my lower control arm and said that I should get new LCA bolts but he did say it was safe to drive so.

If the rack is a replacement then get Oem ITRES. The after market ones will keep failing. They are trash.

Not on my 4runner, but on other vehicles I've seen this caused by the control arm bushings being wore out or all of the rubber actually missing from them being worn so bad.

Personally i just bought and lifted mine. When i went to break the tierods loose to do a quick dirty alignment till i could get it into an alignment shop the passenger tierod cup popped right off the ball!
I replaced both tierods that night. Tonight doing all 4 ball joints and checling ALL bushings so i can get my good alignment done.
