Loss of Power When Warm

I just started to experience this issue on wends. When I first start the truck up it cranks right up and runs and drives fine.

HOWEVER Once its warm and I park it it, upon restart it idles very rough and stumbles when accelerating. Just now I started it up, drove 10 miles, ran fine. I parked it for 20 mins and upon restart it idled rough and I had no power, CEL light came on as soon as pulled out. I stumbled all the way home and it ran extremely rough.

Plugs and wires are brand new.

I searched and couldnt find anything, any thoughts?

Sounds like it has a hot miss. Get the codes pulled like Singtoe said to make sure. If it's a miss, it could be a few things.. a leaky injector or a dirty/bad MAF would be a couple easier possibilities. But.. usually a leaky injector will flood the cylinder, but then it burns off after a few seconds and runs normal. Since yours is missing all the way home, I would lean more towards MAF over injectors. I've never seen a bad O2 sensor cause a miss, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

A sticking valve, head gasket or cracked head could be some worst case scenarios. Is your coolant level staying normal or has it gone down lately? You can test the electrical function of the injectors, but a leak can't always be seen from above. But, sometimes you can look at the valley of the engine (near the injectors) and see or smell leaking gas.

Check your engine oil and also tranny oil (to rule out the milkshakes).

You could drive it for a while, park it and let it sit ~20 min. Then pull the spark plugs before you restart it. You can see if you're leaking coolant or fuel into the cylnder(s). Also if the plugs are discolored it can tell you a lot.

Thanks for the detailed info guys.

Once its daylight I'll take a closer look. I'm heading to autozone tomorrow afternoon to pull the codes and will report back.

I have an aftermarket tranny cooler so I wouldn't expect to see milkshake but I'll inspect everything mentioned thoroughly.

Brian I think may be on the right track, but until ya post the code, nothing of merit will come from this thread. Then we can get down to making more credible suggestions.

Not to take over this thread but I have been having a similar problem as well. Once engine is warm it has a rough idle only when in PARK is sitting in Drive at a stop light. Normal idle is about 700 but when it happens or cycles it shoots up to about 800 or so is one cycle then another will be that is drops to about 500 or so and then goes back to normal. One cycle, either when is goes up or down, lasts only about 10 seconds or so, but occurs often. Had a tune up recently due to the check engine light being on. The code that was coming up was bad O2 sensors, but the mech pulled them and they were fine. He cleaned them up and check engine light was disabled. Any ideas????

checked oil and coolant level, everything was normal.

Went to autozone, pulled a single code P301, misfire in cylinder #1.

Still runs fine cold and this only happens when warm. The CEL light turned itself off on the ride home, even though it was still running real rough.

From searching the forums, I've seen a re-occuring topic of bad fuel injector that similar to my symptoms/code.
Can you advise on the how I should approach this?

Am I hurting the truck by driving before fixing this issue?

Thanks

For anyone searching the future, the problem turned out to be the #1 injector.

Replaced that and its running fine
