Lost all keys - how screwed am i?

almost all 4th gens are chipped. Fat soft plastic head with chip inside. Some toyota's require a reflash of the ECU if all keys are lost. Dealer I worked for didn't have equipment as it was about 3g's. If required google "toyota computer/ecu reflash" for keys and several places should pop up. Cheapest way was to pull ecu and ship to them and usually they'd reflash and provide uncut preprogrammed keys to get cut at dealer. I don't remember for sure if 4th gens' have to be reflashed or get new computer, but think 3rd gens do if chipped.

As long as you have proof ownership (e.g., Title) you can have a new key made based on the VIN. Note that a key with the RFID chip to start the car costs like $80.

I was under the impression that you can purchase a set of cheap keys on amazon/ebay and program it yourself using the door, key turning combo thingamabob. Never tried it myself since I have a set of two keys and remotes.

True Value made a copy of my chipped key. $60 range for cost I think.

Cheapest way is to find a hacked version of techstream, get an xhorse, then go to the immobilizer menu and hit the "reset immobilizer". Then program any key you want to any car you want. I lost all my keys and programmed a new master and valet keys myself. Note that you can't do anything without techstream on the 05+ and none of the sequences of unlock, lock, stand on your head and do the hokey pokey or anything like that you read about on the internet will work on the newer models.

Find them, and hope that the key the prior owner provided is a master key.

You must have a master key to program additional keys -- without it, you need to replace the computer for a couple of thousand bucks.

You can call the dealer and give them the VIN and they will sell you a master key for less than $30 already cut, you will still need it programmed but you can get several keys at once and a key fob and only pay for the programming once. That is what I did when I ordered my spare keys.

They can make a key, but they can't program it into the system without a master key.

The dealer can program without a master key, they can even make you a new master key already cut for less than $30. they programmed my new master and I only had a spare aftermarket key when I bought my 4Runner.

This is exactly what I did when I was sold a car without a master key. You can find the OBD cable with a "liberated" version of Techstream on Amazon. You have to buy immobilizer pincodes from shady looking websites, but they absolutely work (and if anyone is reading this that needs it, DM me since I have a few left). It cost me all of $40 with the cable and the pincodes, and took about 20 minutes of time.

It of course requires some amount of computing abilities since you have to set up a VM of Windows XP to run Techstream off of, but that is a simple YouTube video or two of explanation if you've never done it before.

Again though, you absolutely don't need to pay an arm and a leg to get this done though.

Alright here is the deal - I got a really good locksmith out and he was able to reset the system, make a new key, and program it into the system.

This was all done without me having any kind of key. You need to make sure you have a good locksmith and he will be able to help.

What did all this end up costing? Sounds like a good locksmith is a far better option than the dealer.

You know you’re asking someone who hasn’t been active since 2012 and this is a post from 2009, right? I’m confident they are gone and prices have changed a lot in the past 11 years. Just saying
