lost my brakes!

My brake pedal goes to the floor on my 04 V8 and barely stops the truck. I stopped over at the local mechanic in town and he said it needs a new master cylinder which would be would be very expensive - he said over 2,000 off his head but he cannot get to it for a couple of weeks. Do you really need to replace the whole cylinder or is it just the booster pump part of it that needs replacing?

It could be just the electric motor or accumulator and or pump, very seldom does the entire assembly go bad, if you can still hear the little motor running then you can rule that out, and start with the accumulator and or pump, the accumulator is the least expensive but be sure to get the O-ring that seals it.

The accumulator and pump can be bought as a assembly and would be the way I would go, but you can get the accumulator by itself, I haven't seen the pump sold as a separate part.

ok that makes me feel a little better! I can't hear anything but I am pretty much deaf anyways. I am going to take it to another mechanic that hopefully can replace parts this week as you suggest. I am on vacation next week and need to tow the boat.

then tis the electric motor that has likely failed,
complete used units go for about $400 on ebay, or you try junkyards around you. i changed the accumulator on mine, and it didnt resolve the problem

Delta with this once before when I worked at a car dealer. Sold a 4th gen, it came back the next day with the same symptoms as yours. We went through 3 used units, all of which wouldn't fit right. Ended up get a brand new one through the dealer($1800 our cost). I would go new if its feasible. The used one has just as much chance going out as yours did. Also I believe you need a scan tool to bleed the abs system correctly.
