Well due to the bad economy i lost my job yesterday. Me and seven other people got laid off due to no work coming in. What makes it worse is that some of the people that stayed, are some of the most overpaid, useless, tits on bull, kind of people. I busted my butt for my boss by working 55-60 hour weeks, weekends, and some holidays and i get the boot. i guess sometimes during these hard times its who you know, not what you know. i apologize for the rant but i just needed to blow of some steam.

My prayers go out for you my friend. I'll pray that you get an even better job with better pay come the first of the year.

Thanks for the pick up guys. I'm only 21 and on my own so it will be hard for a while. But there is an opportunity to better myself here. I'm thinking about business management and starting off in retail. I eventually want to help the little people who get affected more in the end. It sucks to see people work hard to put food on the table to feed their families, and then get tossed to the curb when they are not needed. I'm actually more motivated now more than ever to be something better in life. But to get their is not gonna be easy. As long as i have my trusty 4runner to take me where i need to go, ill be all set :D

It sucks all around. I am one of the workers with lots of senority and I am one of the bosses. I do wonder if I am worth double to triple of what a younger worker makes. I work for the state and our gov. made workers who make over a certian amount having to take off 1 to 2 days off a month. It is not the most ideal situation, but at least we are keeping more of our workers.

I remember my grandfather talked about working in the great depression and he work one week a month with no pay, then worked two weeks a month with no pay and then got fired. I thought that was just a story, something in the past, not something that would happen now.

I am sorry for your loss of your job and I hope you can find another one soon.
 
In today's society, the rich become richer and the poor become poorer. The low to mid-class workers (those who make 35K/yr and below) usually get jacked. Me personally think it's better to own your own business even tho it's a small one. At least you're the boss. But it costs money to make money. Some peeps say it's better now for the youngins to join the military while the economy sucks.
 
If you want to stay employed a technical license is a key factor. whether a police officer, a doctor and an engineering degree or a respiratory therapist you can pick up a phone and get a job. I remember being 21. this is good advice. choose something that you really like to do........best of luck. potatoes and cheese are relatively cheap. I remember that from hard times.
 
Sorry to hear about your luck man. I have found that as I get older (still only 22), it gets harder and harder to have a good work ethic when you start to realize that 90% of the time the only thing you get out of it is self-gratification. Not telling you to slack off on your next job, just *****ing about the system. Luckily I have been able to keep my motivation and stay busy even when it seems moot.

In my experiences, these things tend to work out for good people. You will struggle for a while, but hopefully you will find yourself in a better situation where you are happier. It may not be your next job, but just hang in there and do what you gotta do to stay afloat.
 
Thanks guys, I appreciate it! I hope it doesn't happen to any of you guys. I'm kinda glad that i didn't get the 05 4runner i was after, i would have been screwed big time! But hopefully it doesn't get to the point to where i have to attach a mailbox to the hood of my 4runner. I grew up poor so, i think i can manage to stay afloat for a while.

members of this forum and Yota Tech for example are some of the most loyal folks I have not met but feel like family.

Don't hesitate to be more specific about where you want to be or the type of work you are willing to do.

Sorry to hear what has happened, but as others alluded-these things often have a way of working out better for you in the long run.

Not to encourage my mom!-but she tells me constantly how Tulsa OK has plenty of jobs and the cost of living is below average and so on.

But if you are like many of us-you love where you are at now and would not consider a move. I encourage you at your age to leave all options open. Be glad you do not have a wife and kids to tie you down to Bourbon City ( I am guessing- I have not met you)

If you are mechanically inclined at all I would encourage you to get trained in emerging tech-like becoming a solar panel installer or the like.

Alternately old school tech-car repair- is a steady paycheck and work is always available. ASE or other certification will only push you up the ladder of advancement that much quicker.

Sorry to hear of your job loss, but it is true that one door closing often means that another one will open. (insert voice of Yoda there)

Times are tough, but at least you are still very young and don't yet have a family to feed, a mortgage to pay or childen to put through college. Think about 40-somethings who have worked hard as heck for years and years, and all of a sudden end up with a pink slip.

It is best if you can get some type of training (education alone doesn't cut it anymore), certification or specific skill sets not often found in "regular" people. There are welders, electricians, pipefitters, draftsmen and even truck drivers (with CDLs) who are doing quite well in this troubled economy. Right now, diesel mechanics can basically write their own ticket! Not every kid is going to be a doctor, lawyer or Indian chief.

I made decent money (for a just turned 21 year old) with medical, dental, vacation. 401k, etc. My boss had taken me in and i was there for almost two years. I worked my butt off to prove myself and he liked that. I have family problems that sometimes crossed over to my work ethic but he understood and never booted me once for it. he said he had high hopes for me if i stay with the company. I am a very loyal worker and though we were slow for sometime, he said not to worry we will be ok. then earlier this week, we get laid off from out of no where because he cant stay afloat with us on board.

I was kinda of upset when he said that. He had told me he had high hopes for me, he would not let me quit, and that my future was secure. He said that we were laid of for 2-5 weeks with no guarantee of us getting called back. Told us to go collect unemployment and good luck. And that brings us up to this point. I do eventually want to return to school for business management but now I'm set back for a bit. i do appreciate the support you guys are giving me to keep my head up and i will manage and get through this rough part of the year.

business and small business is struggling right now. The downturn probably hit your boss fast and he was not aware that it could or would come so quickly. Since he has been good to you, I am sure that you are cutting him some slack as well. Long tern it is anticipated to get worse. all of us have issues which affect our work at times family illness etc. About school student loans are becoming tighter however going to a 4 year college increases your chances of getting a loan. bus admin is a good choice and if you add a license (long term care administrator, certified financial planner) to it and you have a ticket that you can count on to get you employed and keep you there.
