Ok i have a 2000 SR5 with the sport package. 4.30's with the locking rear diff. Well we got a bit of snow here in st louis last weekend, and i went out to play, well i put her in 4Lo locked the rear diff and did a few axis spins. I had the wheel turned hard over and in 2nd had her at about 4500rpm for maybe 15-20 secs.
Well after all this i noticed that my steering was heavy at times. I later find that whent he motor is under 1500rpms there is NO power steering, even at speed. i can be cruising at 45mph and as long as i let of the gas it takes both arms to turn the bas****. Now im rather mechanically sound and the thing that makes me scratch my head is that, if you are moving that power steering doesnt take too much effect in turning. If your driving at 30+mph the car wont turn too much differant with or without PS. So the fact that its hard even at speed has me at a loss. Now if i rev it up about 2K rpm than i can hear the pump and it soudns like it has air in the lines, however it wont ever bleed out.
My dad is the service manage at a local toyota dealership and they are stumped, the only hint i got was that some of the toyota pumps have a proportioning valve that could possibly be stuck. But they werent sure if my truck had one. So what are your thoughts? The fluid level is normal, there are no leaks on either the pump or the rack. A good way to describe how it feels is if you ever had it in 4wd on dry pavement and tried to turn the wheel. And i know that 4wd is disengaged as i can spin only the back tires in the rain.
Any help would be great cause id hate to buy a new pump and not fix the problem.
