Lost rear wiper, washer, defogger

The rear wiper, washer, and defogger are dead on my 4Runner. The only fuse that was marked for any of those was the washer, and it's good. Before I go give the local Toyota dealer a bunch of money does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

BTW. I have two inline fuses below my fuse box. Does anyone know if they're stadard or related to an ad-on? I bought the car used, and it has after market DVD player. I suspect that I also have a remote starter too.

Hi,
Just a suggestion, did you normalize the rear window? Sometimes when disconnecting the battery or switching out fuses, it resets some settings. You will need to normalize the windows, which in turn, might make your rear window heater button, wiper, washer work again.. Just a suggestion

Sure, on page 28 of the 2004 US Manual for the Power Back Window:

If the battery is disconnected or run down the power back window may not operate automatically and the jam protection function will not funtion correctly after you reconnect, replace or recharge the battery. In any cases you should normalize the power back window switch.

To normalize the power back window.

1. Push the "V" (down) switch and lower the window halfway.

2. Pusth the "^" (up) switch until the window closes and hold the wswitch down for a second.

Make sure the window opens and closes automatically. If the power back window cannot be operated properly, have it checked by your Toyota Dealer.

Rear hatch can be found on page 31, page 38 for the moon roof.

I never use the rear wiper/washer, so didn't notice there was a problem until a few days ago after a car wash. Went to turn on the rear wiper and nothing worked. Also had just bought a small trailer and noticed that the wiring plug in the back below the bumper didn't seem to work 'cause I didn't have lights for the trailer.

I'd had the check engine light and pulled some codes back in October. To clear them, I had pulled the + terminal off the battery, then reinstalled. Hadn't run the rear wiper/washer until recently, but sounds like pulling the battery terminal caused the problem. I did what the previous poster said to do, and the wiper/washer now work. Thanks!

I wonder if that little trick will also make the trailer plug work and I'll have lights on the trailer?
 
thats great to hear it fixed the problem. I guess it is a common "problem" after disconnecting the battery. Sorry, I do not know about the trailer issue, but i bet someone else here knows how to solve the issue.
 
What connection are you using? 7-way? 6-way? or the flat ones, 3-way and 4-way. Our trailer was a 5-way (I know odd) But i rewired it to a 7-way and everything works great now. Also try a different car, if its the same then it is an electrical problem, but if it works than something is wrong.

Sorry, the rear glass reset and trailer plug have nothing in common (except they both involve 12V.)
The most common issue with trailer wiring is getting a good ground (-) continuity back to the truck. Also, are the pins on the trailer plug in the same configuration as the T4R plug (check the owners manual.)
Another unrelated hint: always pull the negative battery cables. It is safer and repeated seperation of the (+) connection will lead to a less than perfect fit that leads to corrosion and a bad connection.
 
Not really sure how to describe the plug. The factory plug is that round shape. When I rented a U-haul trailer to haul my motorcycles out to Colorado, I had to buy an adapter for the "flat four" plug, I think it's called. One end of the adapter fits into the round socket of the 4Runner, the other end is flat and has sockets for pins that are on the trailer's plug. The little trailer I bought has a similar looking plug. I first thought that it might just be a poor connection, but wiggled and made sure the connection was tight. Plugged and unplugged it several times, but still no lights. I don't have the trailer handy to check it again, but maybe it's just a poor connection. Since the trailer is new to me, I don't have any idea if it ever worked.

I appreciate this thread, and the helpful suggestion about normalizing the rear window. We had some freezing rain here last night, and while driving I went to switch on the rear defroster and got nothing. Weird. Then I recalled having the battery replaced by the dealership a few weeks ago. Checked the owner's manual and this forum when I got home, and there it was - a nice simple answer. I normalized the rear window and defroster is back in action. Thanks! :)
 
Isn't it amazing? The OM doesn't burst into spontaneous combustion when exposed to light, despite the myths... :biggrin2:
