Loud Engine - Something Wrong?

First of, I apologize for my newness...but this is the first toyota or 4Runner I have ever owned and came from a much more refined Audi.

With that being said, are our V6 engines pretty noisy? At a stop light and at idle, I can hear the repetitive "thumping" of the cylinders or fan..not sure what is it if the radio is off. Now I know this is an Audi, but just wanted to make sure this is normal.

Also, when I step on the gas it sounds like its sucking in all the air it can like it will never be able to breath again.

Finally, when I turn the car off, there is a loud suction and then small pop...please see the video below.

Is this all normal? Again, sorry for being anal about this, but just had to make sure. Thanks!

Thanks! This thing is louder than my old tahoe...but I love it! More than the Audi S4 I came from!

I was surprised too as my 3rd gen didn't sound this loud. I took mine to the dealer saying that it sounds like a diesel when idle. As said above, it is normal.

Thanks for the post. I wondered the same as I am in my first 4Runner. It does "rattle" a bit. I thought the specified 0w20 oil was perhaps to thin.
I was tossing the idea of visiting the dealer some 60 miles away just to have it checked.
You likely just saved me the $$.

The 1GR-FE engine our 4runners have has has a timing CHAIN, not a belt like many vehicles do. Truck engines that run chains for timing are always noisy and will get noisier as they age, but they do not need to be changed every 100,000 miles.

Its good to be aware of all the noises your 4runner makes, so that when you hear something new, you can immediately know something's wrong and get it looked at!

Special thanks to the OP for asking this! I'm super sensitive to noises and am sure I would have been wondering about this once I pick up my 4Runner. This will give me some peace of mind.

Nice to know about the timing chain. Our Tundra 4.7 has a belt that I had changed at 90K miles. Along with the water pump (which was recommended) it was about $600.

It also has two smaller chains that link each pair of camshafts together. More chains = more noise. But it's good noise.

Toyota Tick – it’s all normal

All 1GR-FE engines, be them single or dual VVTi seem to have this "Toyota Tick." Sources seem to range from VSC valves, rocker rollers, fuel injectors, ect. All I know is that these engines tick and are more noticeable with the window down at idle; my suggestion? Apply throttle and listen to some tunes, should quiet it down.
