I have searched the threads many times and came up with conflicting results so asking here to helpfully find the right answer so I can tackle it right away to prevent an on the road failure(not hitting trails until fixed)
2003 V8 AWD LTD, bought at 247k miles with perfect maint history and absolutely nothing wrong except a bit of clear coat and one tiny dent, zero leaks, everything works as it should including the X-reas, amazing really for $4600, where I live that is dirt cheap squared
Never hear with windows up, when down sounds like from the rear, drivers side, clicking at random but becoming more constant time intervals and slightly different frequencies, coming from the rear but could be front due to time arrival to my ears(I have a pretty long history in acoustics)
I thought it was a wheel bearing but some say the CV joint up front, some say could be a brake caliper clip but the brakes are fine, calipers not siezed, not getting hot....though on occasion when parking the car after pulling off the highway I smell heat but cannot tell where from, wheels close to the hubs are cool, etc.
I am retired, DIY only, have to work outside by the RV on gravel, just want to fix the only issue this wonderful 4runner has that I know of (besides goofy fuel gauge I will have to drop the tank to fix but can live with for now as have it figured out).

Note: I have had dozens if not hundreds of vehicles, built many audio comp, autocross, road race, street and track combo vehicles, many trucks, only two SUVs, 2007 low mileage mint 4runner V8 LTD sold when went RVing and missed it hugely...the 4th gen is my favorite all time vehicle, period.
