Loud noise turning in 4WD

My '93 4runner seems to run ok and turn ok in 2wd. In 4wd, It seems to have a problem turning. I can turn a little ok, but if I crank too much, it sounds like it may be binding or something. It clunks and will not move unless I give it alot of gas. Then the tires chirp in the front when I do that. Anyone have any ideas? I just got it running after the previous owner let it sit for a year and a half. It's snowing around her pretty bad and I'd like the 4wd to be running well. Thanks!!!

think thats normal....2nd gens are part-time systems, and shouldn't be run on high traction surfaces(pavement). sounds lilke thats the driveline "bind-up" youre feeling....use the 4wd on surfaces that allow a little slippage (off the pavement, dirt) and it should be fine.
the newer 3rd and 4th gens can run in 4wd on the road tho.

Cool. It sat for so long and I need to hit the hills tomorrow, that I wanted to run it in 4wd for a little while to make sure that it's ready. I think I'm gonna grease the front end tonight, too.

Yup, you should not run 4wd on dry pavement. You should ONLY do so on slippery surfaces (gravel, sand, dirt, mud, snow).

Only the 1999 and up 4runners are capable of 4wd on dry pavement.
