Loud Noise

So my wife just called me and said when she got in our Runner and turned it on there was a loud ticking noise (like chains clanking together) coming from the engine and it slowly went away when the car got warm and now is gone. Does anybody know what this could be? Im gonna check it out when I get home but wanted to see if anyone had this problem before. Thanks

V6 or V8? If its a V8 it could be piston slap, but i don't think it would sound like chains, but piston slap does happen when the engine is cold and does go away as the engine heats up.

What year and what engine?

Try to replicate the noise yourself, that way you can be more descriptive and provide more details.

V8s are notorious for cold start noise, that goes away fairly quickly as engine warms up.

V6s a notorious for "ticking" noise that is always present.

It's likely piston slap - I guessed the age based on roughly how long it seems to take to rear its head - you may not hear it again for a while now temperatures are going up. Mine has it and I only really notice it in the winter.
