Loud water noise when raining

I have a 2011 4runner SR5. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a lot of sound coming from the rear of the vehicle when it's raining. It sounds like really loud running water. I have to turn my stereo up pretty loud to drown out the sound during a descent rain. From the drivers seat it sounds like it coming from just behind the rear passenger seat.

Maybe it's just me but I've never noticed that noise before in any other vehicle I've ever driven. The first time I drove it in the rain it drove me nuts. I'm starting to get used to it now but was curious if anyone else had noticed this in theirs?

I think it's water running from the rain. :jk:

Had a couple rainy days here and i haven't noticed anything.

Yes, it is definitely noisier in the rain in that area you are describing vs our 4th Gen 4R. To me, it sounds closer than the rear of the rear doors, it sounds more like in between the doors. I don't have the best ears for pin-pointing noises though.

It was and is really annoying. I love the 4runner and wouldn't trade it for another SUV out there and I can get over it, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed it. I guess my ears are more sensitive to that noise for some reason. I really just sounds like the rain is channeling down the top rear of the 4runner in a weird way causing a lot of noise. For the most part it's a quiet ride inside until it starts raining, then I have to crank the tunes.

The sound you hear is simply the rain channeling away from the leading edges and getting to the bottom of your vehicle. It is not weird it is the way Toyota engineers designed it. Same way with the cowl and windshield water. Try this: Next time you wash your 4Runner, run a lot of water quickly onto your windshield and cowl. Stop the water flow and listen and look down behind your front wheels. You will hear the same sound (water being channeled) and see the results.

thank you Mr Engineer, but the comments were regarding the amount of noise (vs other vehicles) from said channeling. other vehicles channel water too, right? for example, my 4th gen. yet, it has thicker metal, glass, or insulation to limit the noise inside the cabin.

Other vehicles? My Honda Ridgeline was louder in the rain than the 4Runner. So is my Subaru. I don't know for sure but I doubt that your 4G 4Runner had thicker anything. It is just a different design, which was my point when responding to your original post. Sorry if I did not make that clear.

Thicker hood that doesn't flutter at highway speeds.
