Love my 4 Runner but drove a nice rig this week.

Flew down to my sisters in Miami last week and drove her 2016 Honda Pilot. Wow this is a game changer in the unibody mid size suv field. I never drove or even sat in a Highlander but they cross shopped it and everything else and fell for the Pilot. Check out a Honda lane watch video to see what it has. The huge screen shows the camera view mounted on the right outer mirror when you use the right turn signal that shows the right lane next to the car so you can safely merge right. Also you can push the stalk button to turn it on. Very cool. The headroom is amazing with the sunroof and all the other goodies like pr tailgate. Honda really pulled out all the stops on this one. It also holds a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I rented a new Camry and it was real nice for what it is. Don't like the real low front grill because it won't clear a curb or many parking stops. I scraped a couple times. Is it asking too much to provide a a couple inches more not to hurt your car when u try to park ? Seriously! I would never buy this car because it's just too low and an idiot designed it and the fools let it be produced this way.

Pilot size is nice, but that is all I was impressed with. Yeah there is a bunch of tech stuff, but overall I was hugely dissapointed in the new model. Mind you, we waited a year just to see what Honda would have to compete against the Highlander. The highlander is interior is like a Lexus and the Pilots is like a toy. Rather than going trucky utilitarian like the old middle, Honda added a cheap suv minivan to the lineup. IMO Honda just lost LOTS of loyal fans. Aside from the new Highlander both Honda and Toyota really need to hire some new interior designers because they are really falling behind in materials quality and design. I never thought I would see the day when a Ford pickup interior would make Japanese vehicles look like crap.

The new Pilot looks like a CRV for a reason. The CRV outsold the Civic and Accord last October. That is pretty impressive. The Pilot will be a good seller no doubt since they pretty much followed the CRV recipe.

If I was in the market for a bigger SUV for the wife I would take the Pilot over the Highlander.

The design was no surprise to me given the re-design of the Acura MDX. Looks pretty big and roomy on the inside but it looks more mini-van'ish than the Highlander.

They lost me - since they started to use red rear blinkers (do they try to be more "American" then Ford?). :rant: I was really ready to buy Fit but after I saw its ass I went for Nisan Versa Note.

Haha. Most people I know (including ourselves) that drive Pilots are also parents of young kids. They love the interior because it seems durable/tough and can stand up to dirty messes etc that a Lexus can't. Not everyone wants their SUVs luxurious/high tech

Cannot believe we are discussing a Honda Pilot in a 4Runner forum. My wife has a new highlander. It is a very nice vehicle.
All new cars are going to have the high tech gizmos but I prefer the body on frame 4 wheel drive capabilities of the 4Runner.
Also the pilot is ugly. It's a cookie cutter design

Not gonna lie. The new pilot was announced when I was in the market. The Toyota sales guy pushed me hard towards the Highlander (they had better inventory, compared NoNE for the 4R). The redesign really appealed to me. For a family hauler, it's a damn nice ride.

The Pilot or the expected Ridgeline, both will never be able to touch the off-road capabilities that the 4Runner provides. One of the reasons so many enthusiasts continue to buy 4Runners...For the people who stay on the road 99.9% of the time, these will make great rides.

The Toyota Pacifica.... I mean Highlander is nice inside (not a fan of the center console), the outside reminds me too much of the Chrysler Pacifica though.

Not a bad family vehicle/alternative to a minivan. Though to be honest I'd rather have a fully loaded AWD Sienna than the Highlander (it's really the only minivan I like inside and out, also I think only one of two that comes in AWD which is a plus.)
