It is such big news because Toyota has been nearly perfect for so long. But, if you were to look at the big picture (the whole auto industry), Toyota is still better than other manufacturers in terms of quality, reliability, and durability.
Don't be surprise to see a few slipups from Toyota/Lexus in the near future as Toyota now is breaking new grounds in technology and design. In the past, Toyota would just copy existing technology from other manufacturers and improve upon them. Today, Toyota, with tons of money backing up their own research, is breaking new grounds...so, recalls/TSBs are inevitable. Hopefully, Toyota won't be going down the same path as Mercedes did in the 1990s.

I doubt it. MB started to go down around 1990...the merger between MB and Chrysler was in 1998 (or around that time). MB started to go downhill when the 1990 SL came out...it came out too late, cost way too much to make, and priced way too high for the market. The painstaking (and financially draining) approach of world-renowned quality by Mercedes of old was abandoned to make cars quickly, cheaper, and bring the price down so that MB can sell more cars to more people. MB had to do this because Lexus was coming to market with amazing quality at half the price of MB. Unfortunately, MB went overboard with cost cutting in both designs & materials.

I agree that Mercedes quality has been declided. I had a 1994 300E and it was built solid. Good build and no cheap material. My wife currently has a 2004 E320 and the quality is not as good as the old one. 2004 has more advanced technology but "built-manship" is not as good as the 1994's.
The AC went out 3 times on my wife's car within 5 month and 3K miles. It took the stealer 5 times to fix it. BTW, anyone live in So. Cal, don't take your car to Flecher Jones of Newport Beach. Crappy service there. Checkout other Mercedes Benz forum. You will see lots of complain about them. Don't let me start on them.
I used to work for Mitsubishi Motor HQ. I really like their cars and SUV. They need to be more aggressive on their brand awareness. Mistsubishi built MB small cars in Europe.

I'm not too concerned. The 4Runners are still built in Japan so the craftsmanship is still very high. Now if I were buying a new Toyota, maybe
