Love the Runner but is it ever Noisy!

I'm new to the world of Toyota, having driven Grand Cherokees for 10 years. I'm loving my 06 SE but I've really been surprised by how noisy it is. When passing at highway speed, I'm constantly turning my head toward the passenger side thinking the window is open a bit because of the wind noise. Also, every pebble on the road seems to ping off of my tubular side steps. And finally, the radio volume is horribly outgunned at highway speed. I supposed that is why it came with the speed sensitive volume but I don't use it because I find it annoying.

In contrast, My 02 Grand Cherokee was always really quiet and I even had similar tubular side steps without the splashguards that came standard on my Runner.

I'm just surprised, not complaining.

I'm surprised that you find the 4Runner noisy. I have a Limited, which has different running boards so it may be true that you get the pinging noise with your tubes, although I don't remember hearing anything on the Sport I test drove.
If it sounds like your window is open a bit then I would definately take it to the dealer to see if there is a problem with the door or window seal. Mine is as silent as a bank vault.
The only sound I get into the cabin is engine noise on acceleration. Noise at cruising is minimal.
BTW, how do you like the 4Runner vs. the Grand Cherokee?

Interesting. I find my Runner is one of the quitest vehicles I have ever owned. I can say the same about any Toyota/Lexus I have owned or been in relative to it's respective class.

Are you sure the doors and windows are all sealed well and there are no obstructions?

Duh! I can't believe I just realized this but my Sirius antenna is temporarily routed out the passenger side door and it would make sense that it is the cause of the wind noise. But the engine and tube steps are still noisy in my comparison.

There has got to be something wrong.

This is easily the quietest truck I have owned (owned quite a few including a G.C.) On top of that the '06 has thicker windshield and side windows.

The 4Runners are quiet under 40 mph. At highway cruising speeds the wind noise is downright intrusive. Hopefully the '06's thicker glass really does make a difference. Doesn't really bother me, I just turn up the stereo

There is no way the V8 is louder than the v6.

A few months after having my 4Runner, I noticed some wind noise. Narrowed it down to the sunroof being tilted shut (a little noisy) vs. slid shut (no noise). Also, when looking at the sunroof, it didn't look stopped in the same exact position when slid vs tilted shut.

Took it to the dealer, and they ran some procedure to realign the sunroof, and now the noise is gone.

In general, the 4Runner is a very quiet ride. The V8 is especially quiet and smooth.

Weird....the most commented on aspect of the 4R (by people who don't won one) is how quiet it is....

I traded a 2001 JGC for my 04 4Runner--there's no way the 4runner is louder unless something is wrong. The toyota is easily the quietest sport ute I have owned.

It's quiet on a smooth road. But I think the 4R makes much more noise on a loose surface than the other other trucks I've been in. My '92 Bronco was much quieter on fire roads and simillar surfaces than the 4R. Don

Chrysler/jeep engines are soo loud that they flat out drone over everything in the cabin of a grand cherokee....something is worng.

I still own a straight 6-cylinder jeep grand Cherokee. The engine noise is very load compared to the T4R. Mine is an older one however.

A couple times now, i've taken people for a ride in mine, and they always comment on how quiet it is. They can't believe that an SUV can be that quiet.

Well lets see... I traded in my Trailblazer for my 4R and it seems super quiet in comparison. Then again, my Trailblazer sounded super quiet when compared to my '99 Camaro SS with headers and off road pipes.

That was not even the issue ..............and the V8 is quieter that the V6......lol


I find my o6 to be super quiet and solid. I'm new to this Toyota stuff and am surprised at how quiet it is. The pinging come's from stone's and debris hitting the tube steps from my finding's . I personally don't really notice that anymore. As far as wind noise I don't have any.

My Limited is quieter then my Buddy's 05 GC HEEP, no comparison! The 4Runner is quieter then most lux. cars I've been in, something must be wrong!

I doubt it my wife has an 03 4 runner sport just as noisy on the highway. Don't get me wrong still love the truck just noisy on the highway.

My roommate's '93 Grand Cherokee with an inline V6 is anything BUT quiet in any situation.

Well I guess it all comes down to my Sirius antenna and my base single CD stereo. Next time I'll go for the upgraded sound sytem but I have to admit, I'd miss the corner mirrors in the back.
