Gave them a real greasing today. I forgot to screw on the end of the grease gun last time. fail.

Yeah I had water in my U-joints. A nice yellowish foamy grease came out while it was replaced with new grease. Seems to be doing a lot better now. I do need to balance my tires though.

How much did it cost if you dont mind me asking? i am having a similar issue with my 02 runner 2wd. i was noticing it on the highway a few months ago but really started to notice it after i got my tires rotated. i have the low frequency vibration along with some slight noises that sound like binding. i'm trying to figure out if it the bearings or the u joints. planning on taking it in to the dealership this week but would like to have a good idea of what it is before they rape me on price to troubleshoot.

It was three years ago now, but to my recollection, it was about $200 to replace U-joints. However, the vibration came back and I had to get the drive shaft replaced. Apparently, the rubber between the two concentric parts of the shaft had failed and caused the vibration. I ordered an OEM drive shaft online and paid a local shop to install it. I think the drive shaft was $450, and about $70 to install.

I had the same problem on my 98 2wd but the vibration presented itself at different speeds until it settled in at all speeds. I found the problem to be the rear u-joint. It was destroyed inside the cups where the needle bearings ride. It also appeared that whoever had replaced them before had beat the hell out of them in the process. I had to straighten the "loops" that the u-joint ride in. They were bent all to hell and back. 30k later and no issues.
