Low Fuel Warning Light never comes on

I've noticed twice now that my Gen 4 limited 4Runner never warns me when my fuel is low. The trip computer says it has 33 miles until empty and no warning light. I know it's getting empty, but isn't there a waring light like most modern cars?

Have you tried running out of gas? Im serious when I say this, because I can go another 50 miles after passing "e" and seeing my fuel light come on. I have a 3rd gen, but this is a common issue with these trucks.

I should have an 18.5 gallon tank and the most I've ever filled it up to was 15 gallons. I was past ''E" with the light on, leading me to believe that I still had 2.5-3 gallons left.

I have an 08 Limited V8 4wd and notice the light comes on around 24-25 miles from empty or "0".

I have driven up to 40 miles past 0 before on more than one occasion. Do so at your own risk, but I just do the math on size tank versus average MPG per tank. I generally get 19 to 20 mpg "indicated" per tank, but most of my driving is freeway and I drive slow since the last major gas increase.

Also, my Limited has a 23 gallon tank. I am assuming yours as well.

The trip computer is really strange. Its MPG estimate is too optimistic, and the range can be too pessimistic. It's not clear where it's getting its fuel information from.

I'd suggest that you don't rely on the trip computer.

UGH! It would be great to have a functional fuel guage that you didn't have to second/third guess all the time.
