Low oil pressure

Hi all.

I am looking for opinions/suggestions concerning a low oil pressure indication light.
This may be a bit long so bare with me.

97 4Runner 4x4 Limited, 177k miles
Purchased and found cracked heads
Got JDM engine and swapped all appropriate parts, (new oil pickup tube gasket). When I got the JDM home and removed the valve covers, I was very concerned about the amount of gunk and "burnt" appearance of the cam and lifter areas. I called the JDM folks and they told me that these low mileage engines sometimes do not get regular oil changes. They were able to convince me that what I was seeing was "normal."
Continued with the swap, (with a lot of help from threads on this website).

Started right up, no issues. 10w/30 oil.

After driving for about 15 miles, came to a complete stop, idle at apprx 600 to 650 rpm, (dash gauge), low oil lamp comes on.
If I take the rpm to say, 700, lamp goes out.

Took home, replace oil and filter. Results are the same as above. Put a manual gauge in play, After warming up, 2# at idle, 23# at 3000 rpm.

Did a bunch of reading on this and other websites.

Changed oil and filter, this time 10w-40 plus a quart of Lucas oil restorer.
Started it up, drove for 15 to 20 minutes, put gauge back on, idle 8#, 3000 rpm 45#. Life is good.

Drove for about 150 miles, light back on. put a quart of that "engine cleanout crap" in and changed the oil and filter again, (10w-40 plus Lucas stuff).

Drove for 300 miles, light back on...................

Okay, for those still with me,
I did all the oil changes because I was hoping the engine was cleaning itself up and just plugging the oil filter, but now I am doubting that.
So it basically comes down to oil pump or bearing clearances.
My question is, if it were a bearing issue, why would I not get an oil lamp immediately after the truck is warmed up.
Same goes for bad oil pump or blocked pick up tube.

Thoughts on moving forward?

Confused? You are getting a Oil pressure light after warm up right? You might be right on the fringe of the pressure the switch triggers. 2 psi at idle is not good. Should be around 4-6psi. It might not be a problem as long as it doesn't drop to 0 and goes up when it's driven. Try a slightly thicker oil. (20-50W) My guess is your bearing clearances arent what they should be given the neglect.

Did you replace the oil pump when installing? Every 'new' engine should have one to avoid this problem. :cowboy:

Nope, did not replace the oil pump, (kicking myself in the rear over it too).

Looks like I will pull the engine and replace the pump.
Since the engine will be out, upside down with the pan removed, any one know what the max clearance should be on the main bearings?
Perhaps pull a couple caps and use plastigage to see. If WAY too large, me and the JDM folks are gonna dance, lol
