low profile case / box on roof rack?

Anyone mounted a low profile case/box on their roof rack for tool and recovery gear storage?

I originally thought about ordering the Gobi Toolbox when I bought my rack but didn't really like the cost of it. I've been making an effort to get as much out of the back cargo area as possible by:

1) moving roadside emergency, first aid, and some misc gear/tools up to the Rago storage panels

2) Getting rid of unnecessary or duplicate gear where possible

3) Now this effort - trying to get my recovery gear mounted on the roof as low profile and non-descript as possible.

It should just fit width wise on the far back end of the rack. I also don't think it should stick up past the rails much. I plan to drill 4 holes in the bottom and use stainless bolts, nuts, and washers to mount to the rack. The case is somewhat weather proof but the gear I am throwing in there ins't really that temperature and weather sensitive.

Anyone else used a rifle type case and mounted up on the roof?

I thought about doing this but making some “L” brackets to mount on my crossbars so that I would have side access to the case. I may still decide to do this but I’m working on trying to design a hitch bumper to keep dumb dumbs from damaging my ass end.

How large of a bumper? Just from bumps in traffic and such? Seen this thing from Rago?

Thanks, I was thinking about something that protects more of the bumper. I just don’t want something that going to flex into my plastics if it does get tapped from someone in a parking lot.

Why do you want it on the roof? It's easier to access in when stored the vehicle and it's more secure.

To utilize the space on the roof, to get it out of cabin and provide more room, to get it out of cabin to have one less heavy thing to tie down so it doesn't kill me in a wreck. I also just want to.

Tools, lots and lots of tools. In the rear is a mish mash of gear I keep on hand at all times. Working in the firearms industry, I always have a range bag full of gear ready to go, along with a sleeping bag, a room for the awning, and other misc. items that are attached to the Rago panels. So room inside of the vehicle is reserved for items I access regularly.

In the case are wrenches, sockets, a torque wrench, a wiring kit, a couple snatch blocks, shackles, a strap, dead blow hammer, and other assorted small hand tools.

Most of the vehicle can be worked on while on the ground and with 10,13,14,17,19,21 & 24mm sockets/wrenches, wiring is self explanitory, and recovery gear it always great to have on hand.
