Low RPMs/tachometer

Hey all,

Just bought my wife an 05 4Runner (6 cylinder). Question regarding the tach/rpm, it seems to run really low? For instance while driving at 40 mph the tach shows right around 1000 rpm, almost like its idling. While accelerating it barely creeps to 2000 rpm.

To include, I hear a faint whine either coming from the chassis, or it could be the tires. But the tires are pretty stock road tires. Maybe it's me, but not use to having a vehicle run such low rpms. My Nissan Titan revs out more and has a 5.6 V8!

Is this normal with the V6 4Runners?

Mine whines when accelerating. But as does any Toyota 5 speed I've driven. A faint whine while accelerating.

If she doesn't get on it it shifts quick and keeps the revs low. My experience.

I have a 07 6 cylinder. Does the 05 have a 5 speed? I don't remember if Toyota switched on 06 or 05.

Maybe someone will give a better technical answer

pretty sure 05 is five speed, but either way its sounds normal. my 04 with the 4 speed is about 1k at 40, only 2k at 70. if there was a trans issue the opposite would be happening, you'd be at higher rpm to maintain the same speed
