lower ball joint question

I noticed today that one of my lower ball joint boots has a cut in it, and I can see where the grease has been leaking out. I have been planning on replacing them when I go home in about a week. The problem is I didn't know that there was a hole, or that grease had been coming out. I checked and their isn't any play when the wheel is jacked up and shaken from top to bottom, so that is good. I have a 6 hour, 300 some mile trip back home. What are the chances of me making it back without an issue? I have seen these things break and it isn't pretty, but I dont know when I could do it within the next week. Well I guess it is more of an issue getting a Toyota ball joint than installing it. I haven't noticed any play in the steering either. I feel like I might be stupid by not changing it before the trip... I was also wondering if I should change the Upper ball joints if they don't look bad? Have they been known to fail as often?

Dont worry about the uppers.

Take it to a dealer, many of the 01-02's were involved in a LBJ recall, maybe yours still needs that done. If not, they are one of few I would trust to do the job right.

You will get home just fine. they get bad before they fail, and yours sound fine for now.

Awesome, I guess I just needed some reassurance from someone. I'll definitely look into that recall. Do you think I could find out if it was part of it online, or would I need to call a dealership?

anyone ever have that website say its having difficulty retrieving the dealer information? I've run the VIN on carfax before so I know it works... The website recognizes that its my car but nothing else shows up.

Yeah, restart the web browser. If that doesn't work try a different computer. I have gotten that error from them before.

If this helps I just ordered the LBJ's for my 01' runner and I got a part number.

Yeah that definitely helps. That looks a lot bigger than I was expecting...is it more that just the joint? or can you only buy this assembly?

Yeah, it's the whole assembly. Theres the 4 bolts from the bottom to the control arm, tie rod end, and 1 nut holding the BJ to the steering knuckle. It makes the parts a little more expensive but it also makes the BJs a breeze to change.
