Summary:
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT.
Consequences:
THE LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

wait wait wait. I have an 01 and last time I went to the dealer and asked if there were any recalls for my year 4runner they told me no. Im not the original owner but should the recall still be available for me. I was gonna replace them when I got a chance anyways.

No I don't think you understand. I simply asked if there were any recalls for my year 4runner. I didn't even give them my vin. They just straight up told me there weren't any. So either the guy was a liar or he didn't know what he was doing. (happens a lot a dealerships)
wouldn't it show up on dealer records if they did do the recall? Ive checked and see no records of the LBJs being replaced. or any recalls

I think the guys at the counter are told not to bring up really old recalls just because it's a pita to have to have 20 year old car lbjs in stock. My guy didn't "notice" the recall until I actually told him about it.

Can't you go to the Toyota site, and put your VIN# in to check if there are any recalls active for your vehicle? I have don't that hoping that maybe I could have them replaced on their dime. But, as far as I can tell, when I put my info in, it says that there are no recalls active.

Like I said it's handled pretty underhandedly by Toyota. I haven't seen the recall on any site where you put in your vin. Only when I told the guy at the counter about the recall did he look it up correctly. It sucks

Toyota told me mine were done.
So I did mine anyway. A critical failure of the LBJ at highway speed would likely be catastrophic, so why take a chance on parts that are not expensive and easy to replace?
In fact I will likely do my again in a hundred thousand miles or sooner if it appears necessary by inspection.

The guy at the Toyota dealer is a moron if he thinks he can tell you your truck has no recalls active without you giving the VIN. That's the only way to check, it all revolves around your VIN. Mine didn't show up on the Toyota owners site as having any recalls active, but it also didn't show the recall as being done under the service history. I called my local Toyota dealer, asked if he could check if the LBJ recall had been done and I gave him the VIN. He told me it had already been done in like 2006 or something like that. He gave me the month and year it was done, but said that was all he could tell. He couldn't pull the mileage.
Your's has most likely been done like mine was. I think most of these trucks had the recall done already by the owner of the truck at the time the recall was issued like 10 years ago or whenever it was.
This was exactly my scenario and thought process.

It will at least tell you if your truck was affected by the recall, but I'm not sure if it will have record of it being completed or not. Will be interesting to see.
When you take a vehicle into a service department for any kind of work it will notify them if there are pending recalls, but if he didn't have your VIN at all there's no way he could have known.
