Lower than normal transmisson temperature?

So run an electric fan for the trans cooler. Worth it IMO just for the peace of mind. 3rd gen runners are one of my favorite, I plan to buy one sooner than later. This will be one of my first mods.

I have a 10" 3000rpm fan right on the external cooler. It won't lower the temps from 245+ to under 200, they'll stay above 215.

Again ask me how I know the ONLY PROPER solution is to run the stock trans cooler and (optionally) an external cooler. External alone won't be able to handle EXTREME situations. Ask me how I know!!! :cowboy:
 
So this is starting to worry me the more I think about it. I haven't had a chance yet to remove the send line and confirm I have fluid flowing but it's starting to seem that must be the problem.

Is it possible that I didn't fully seat the torque converter which would explain my "cool" temperatures because fluid is not flowing? I don't know enough about transmissions to know if the pump wasn't engaged at all if it would still work or not.

The tranny is working fine on face value (shifting, smoothness of shifts, timing of shifts etc).

When I had the engine out, the torque converter did not stay on the engine, it stay in place. Unfortunately, I didn't think to check it until I had the engine partially back in place. What I did was reach up underneath and manually spin the torque converter (while pushing) several times to make sure it couldn't go in anymore, it did not.

When I was bolting up the flex plate to the torque converter, they were barely touching. All I had to do was use a screw driver to put a tiny bit of resistance on the torque converter to keep it from spins until I got one of the bolt holes to line up.

I'm fearing that I may have to pull the GD transmission AGAIN if I didn't get the torque converter fully seated. Or, is it impossible for it be working if the pump isn't engaged?

Thoughts?
 
I rewatched Tim/Seans video on doing the manual flush of the transmission (run a quart out, add a quart) and it takes approximately 10 seconds to pump out 1 quart of fluid from the send line.

I have a baseline now to know if my pump is working as it should.

Fingers crossed but I got a bad feeling I might be pulling the transmission (AGAIN), replacing the torque converter and probably the pump as it will probably be damaged (I have insanely bad luck).

It is impossible for an automatic transmission to do anything without fluid pressure. The pump is working just fine.

Did you pull the torque converter off the trans? If you haven't, there's basically no way for it to come unseated. Also, the motor wouldn't bolt to the trans if the torque converter isn't seated fully.

If it wasn't seated fully, you'd hear a loud crack when you broke the pump forcing it fully into the trans as the bellhousing bolts are tightened... (and you wouldn't be able to drive the truck)

I want to punch glow shift in the face....

I pulled the send line to check for flow and it's flowing just fine.

I then went on a spirited drive to heat things up.

Removed the send line again (gauge still reading 80) and let it pump out fluid. I checked the fluid temperature with my IR gun and..... It's 155 degrees.

Had me all flipping worked up.

Not sure what's wrong with the gauge but I'll have to look into it......after I punch them in the face.

What's weird is the Guage did go up when u heated the sensor up with a heat gun. My guess is it's readings are way off all of sudden (low)

A bit of a stretch, but I wonder if there was an air bubble around the sending unit, so it didn't register the fluid temp. Or just a bad sending unit/gauge, although it's odd that it decided to crap out right during the engine swap.
 
Who knows, I did a google search and found a post on yotatech where a guy emailed glowshift and asked if he could get the specs for what the sending units ohm readings should be at different temperatures. I'll check it tomorrow.

I'm definitely glad that is all it is. It is mind blowing how my luck works out some times. The fact that it decided to act up at the exact time I did an engine swap is crazy.

The wires, sending unit, connections and gauge have not been damaged. I tripled checked.

Plus, it still "works" but the reading is all of a sudden way off?

Glad you figured out the culprit. Must be quite the relief after spending a sleepless night worrying that you messed up the transmission installation or worse!
 
Cheap gauges cause all sorts of problems. I’m looking at a trans temp gauge and I will prob go auto-meter or VDO.

Glad it was an easy fix!
 
Yep. I had a Glow Shift unit that was bad out of the box. Returned it and went Auto Meter. Glow Shift sucks.

How long have you had the auto meter and how is it holding up?

My glowshift gauge is about a year and half old and it's already having problems.

Maxtow is made by Glowshift, hopefully you have better luck with yours than I did with mine.

I'm going to send them an email about mine. It is out of warranty so I'll probably have to buy a new sender (15 bucks).

I'd like to hear how they handle your claim. I have a Glowshift too (the fully digital version), and I much prefer the digital readout over autometer's narrow sweep. But obviously if it doesn't hold up, or worse, gives bad readings, then it's not more useful than a brick.
 
How long have you had the auto meter and how is it holding up?.


It's been in for about a year, which is 365 times longer then the Glow Shift lasted. It's analog and very simple so I see it lasting a very long time. It's not fancy but it does it's job well. It's been through more rough terrain then I can count and I haven't had to do anything to it.

Obviously if you like shiny and techy it's not for you. I like things that are simple and that last. So far it's hit both of those.
