Lowering kits/parts

I know, I know. But I have a 1997 "2" runner, and want to drop it at least 6". I have no love for the pre-runner look, and have zero need or want to lift it sky high...it's a two-wheel drive! It was a tow vehicle for a retired couple, and they had the transfer case and front dif removed, and a standard auto-tranny put in. Basically, I have a nearly new '97 Runner with less than 20k on the dial (score!!)

My wonderful little Ranger got smashed by a Chevy driving jerk making a left turn from the right lane. The 2runner is my consolation prize from the insurance company. The Ranger was static dropped 4 inches all around, and rode really sweet, even with 304,000+ miles and zero major troubles.

I really want that sweet ride feel back again.

Is there a lowering kit made or available, or do I have to go the custom route?

I'm right there with you man. I cant seem to find any kits for the runner. I'm thinking I may have to go custom with it. A nice 1" or 2" drop is perfect for my needs, I may slam it depends on tire rub and what not.:frog:
 
Thanks RR. Yeah, I don't want to scrape, but I do want it down to at least "car" level and use a lower profile tire. It has big all terrains on it, and it drives, well ....like a truck!

My Ranger was wrecked 3 days before Christmas, and I'm still not used to this big V6 :)
 
I've only found the 1in drop from burtman. I think you would have to go the custom route. I defiantly want to see when it's done though. Good luck.
 
Yeah, the Burtman was all I could find that was a kit of sorts. I figured that the Runner has been around for a while, and the custom suspension companies would have built various kits for all models by now.

I guess it will have to be custom then.
 
Will like to lower my 5Gen 2-4 inches but since Toyota didn't sell the 5Gen on Japan no one makes a lowering springs like they did for the 4Gen and below like the one found on Burtman site.

Just don't quite understand the reasoning behind lowering it, but if that's how you prefer it then go for it.
 
That highlander does look pretty darn cool......








Hope none of my 4th gen off roading buddies see that I said that......
 
Hey all im sure some of you have seen my post in the 4thngen t4r... I a, currently lowering my 06 4runner...im doing it slowly and piece by piece so i can notice the changes in the ride...so far ive lowered the rear about an inch... n it looks good and believe it or not rides good too!... my first trial is a cut spring in the rear...Check out the link...im going to be ordering the front kit tomorrow... Heres the link to my thread...for the 5th gen check the suspension and see if its like its counterparts from the years before...might get lucky...

For anyone that may still check this post. I am also in the same boat. so far my research has only been halfway fruitful. tacomas and 4runners share the same front suspension and their is one company I have found so far that has a 2" front lowering spring that will fit a runner. im still trying to figure something out for the rear. I am toying around with finding a reputable machine shop to cut 1 coil and reshape (not get a torch and heat up) for the top perch, Im also looking into the possibility of rear springs from a highlander. their is a 1" kit that is available but, its for the 4wd which almost brings it down to the same height of a 2wd so it would be useless for a 2wd
 
Anyone looking to lower a 3rd gen 4runner, I found a way. I havent done it yet due to lack of funds but, 1st gen tacoma 2" lowering springs for the front will work for the 3rd gen t4r and for the rear Eaton Detroit Springs inc has a 2" rear lowering spring part # is MC7015-2 eaton want $239.95 plus shipping, the Tacoma front lowering springs I believe are from belltec they are roughly $200 plus shipping, shipping varies depending on where you get them from, one place I found wanted $170 for the springs and $200 shipping. I would just assume order them from a store that is an authorized belltec dealer
 
i used kyb gas adj. struts with v6 accord coilovers mounted on it and a rear rv coil spring helper and a rear air shock set up

my other thought was to run the coilover and the front strut in the rear with out the upper strut mount in place of the stock shock and spring set up but never got around to trying it....

but this is to avoid doing the frame swap to a 2wd 80's p/u
