i have noticed a nasty noise while doing a slow that gos from nonexistent while cold to a very nasty scraping/rumbling noise when hot..

i have done some water crossings resonantly could i have sucked in some water and killed the oil?

i want to change the oil anyway but how worried should i be about the diff?

and what type of oil should i use?

Yeah, you should be worried about diff noises.

Definetly start with a gear oil change, and make sure you use some specifically for an LSD, or regular type and and a small bottle of LSD Additive.

Check your owners manual for specific viscosity and API grade.

i changed the oil..

it doesn't seem to have made any difference..

the oil looked good, slightly darker than the new stuff, and the bung had minimal stuff stuck to it..

its hard to tell where the noise is coming from.

it sounds like its more on the passenger side but I'm not sure..

could it be a bearing?

Lots of possibilities for noises. Could be a bearing in the diff, wheel bearing, brakes, etc.

Get the rear wheels off the ground and start rotating them by hand while listening.
