Would you change your oil without changing the filter? Would you shoot your gun without cleaning it afterwards? Do you wipe up after roll in the hay?

how bad could it be? :happy bda

If you got the 15k service it should have been included but if it was extra and you decided against it no sweat, just get it done at 30k long as your not doing deep water crossings.

Some members lub every 5 or 10k, Im gonna get everything done at 30k

Read your service Passport manual. Lubricating the propeller shaft is required every 5,000 miles.

This is a virtually no-cost procedure, so there's no gain by blowing it off. If I forget to do mine at each oil change, the vehicle soon develops the dreaded binding-slip-yoke klunk every time I stop to remind me that I've screwed up.

Shouldn't be a biggie. I did mine at 20k, and I have done a bit of off-roading as well.

Few dealers seem to do it, as a lack of grease in the slip joints on the driveline is the #1 cause of the driveline jerk at a stop. A couple of shots with a grease gun solved mine instantly and that was after I complained to the dealer a number of times about the jerk. Just request them to do it at 20k and verify that they actually do it, dealers:rolleye2:

Do you use the two different types of grease? Lithium based in the Spiders and Moly in the Yoke and Cardan Joint?

I used Lithium in the Spiders (U Joints) and Moly Lithium on the Yoke, no cardian on my 4WD which I can remember. No probs with the clunck after that, but I have only done 2.5k miles and some wheeling after I did the driveline service.

I think BOb did a god write up onthe 3rd gen, which applieas to the 4th Gen as well. Go here http://www.4runners.org/articles/zerk/

I use synthetic NGLI 1 with Moly disulfide on everything. Toyota quit recommending separate types of grease for the spiders and slip yokes with the '03 models.

Thanks for the link, it's a good one. My 2004 service manual shows a double-cardan joint in the maintenance section (both diagram and text), but it does not appear in the driveshaft section (diagram nor in the text). I haven't had the opportunity to grease the driveshaft in my 2004 4Runner yet, but I’ll bet there is no cardan joint, as you have observed in yours.

It seems that maybe they carried over the same maintenance diagram year after year (it looks identical to the diagram for the '88 4Runner). They still require two types of grease depending on the fitting. Maybe I'll look into using a single synthetic moly-disulphide grease, as Khaug suggested, when I'm ready to do the job.

I wouldn't recommend this as the Toyota repair manual still states both greases for the different applications. I'm not a lube expert, so I would refer that to an expert in the difference between the two greases.

My suspicion is that the moly grease is more fluid than the normal lithium grease to allow it to lube up the slip joint easier, but this characteristic might cause leakage on the U joints.
