Luggage/Utility rack

Recently I was detailing my 99 SR5. While drying around the luggage rack I decided to loosen and take off the three roof protecting ribs to discover years of built up dirt and crud. After washing off most all of it I still have the outlines of the ribs going across the roof. Being that my 4runner is white and has lived in a garage 5 of it's 7 years there is no color fade or discoloration. I tried to useing some diluted simple green on the lines and it worked on parts but some lines are still visible. Any suggestions on how to get the rest of the lines off?

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Depending on how deep they are, you could use some rubbing compund, by hand. Mine are a little deeper, so they will stay, mostly because it doesn't bother me too much. If they are deeper like mine, a pro detail shop can surely get rid of them with a buffer. Are you going to leave them off or keep them on? I'm leaving mine off. I al so painted my side rails black again becuase they were flaking, looks nice, what shape are yours in?

Thanks for the info I will try that. I am going to leave them off for now on. My side rails and the two large cross bars are in good shape I have some flaking on the undersides of the cross bars. What kind of paint did you use to touch them up with?

I had some flat black paint I used on the grill of my BMW, but I'm rethinking that as my friend waxed my car and got wax on it, bottomline, that white wax residue is absorbed in the paint, so it's not rubbing off. I think I will go with a satin next time, not flat, not glossy, just right.
