I would think, just based on personal experience, that its simply due to the extra rear traction.
you can go a LOT more places easier, with the rear locked. in fact, id say having the rear locked, and in 2wd is ALMOST as good as being in 4wd and open/open.

so when the rear is locked, the front is doing MUCH less work. thus, less parts breaking.

I know my open open still out does my buddys locked rear in 2wd that is for sure. But I agree with what you saying.

I have noticed the rear overall is way better. But that front when crawling can really help you pull over an obstacle. After all this said I still will keep front open unless I go SAS.

I've been having a ton of problems with my elocker, so the idea of a simple lunchbox locker is attractive.
I will be putting a lunchbox in the front of my runner, but gearing will come first. Maybe it's different in an auto, but with my 5 speed and stock transfer case, the lack of lower gearing is way more limiting than my open front diff or ifs suspension travel.

Trucks with expensive SAS's but stock transfer case setups confuse me...

I have a Aussie locker in the front, Lockright in the rear.. I also changed to manual hubs up front. Works great off road, I shift in and out of 4L and 2H when I need to.. Steering offroad when locked is not a big deal, wouldn't worry about it. On pavement, it's not so fun.. would't recommend it.

My trucks ability to climb was greatly improved with the front locker obviously. I like to Drink and wheel, and it holds up pretty well. I broke the right front twice in the same day when following a bunch of 1st gen 4runners doing climbs. I am not very nice to my truck.. you know when you are about to break the CV... easy on the gas, and you probably never will. it takes 20-30 minutes to pop in the replacement, I always keep one as a spare.
