so ive been on and off this site for a couple of years now... i have a 98 4runner sr5 that i love and my family loves. other than ripping the steps off i havent really done anything. now it will never be true off road rig mostly forest roads and steep/not improved boat ramps here in western washington. i know you can lift but is there a decent way to just up grade the suspension to make it a bit stouter. tires and bumpers will go on here in the next couple of months. any thoughts

Just give it a new set of Moog suspension and if your budget allows, run a cheap set of the air spring things that go inside the coils on the rear.
There's a member on here that did that and added an air line that would let air transfer from one bag to the other to help flex. I think it was about $150 mod if I'm not mistaken. But he may have on board air, I'm not sure. I'll keep an eye out for his build thread.
