MAC Problem SOLVED

Does your Mac seem to be way slower then normal? You could have a bug.

I had one. Here is how I fixed it and how you can find out if you have one.

1) Start off by opening your applications folder
2) Open the program called Terminal
3) Type in top -o CPU (The o is o the letter), and then hit enter
4) Watch closely to the column with the name %CPU
5) If you notice a very large number (50+%), and you don't recognize the name, you could have a bug.

*Now if you do notice strange high numbers from unknown names follow the next steps*

1) Open a finder window
2) Type into the search bar Activity Monitor
3) Open the application called Activity Monitor
4) Find the name that was taking the highest percentage CPU that you found in the Terminal application.
5) Click that name and then click the red stop sign.
6) A pop-up should appear, press either quit or force quit.

You should be good to go.

I had a bug called HP Printer Mo which was taking up 196% CPU, that's only 4% away from maxing both cores! My laptop is now running better then ever!
Which means instead of buying a laptop, it's air locker time!

I've got the Activity Monitor pretty much running full time in the background.

Then again, I'm an IT specialist by trade; and I've got a brand new Mac Mini Server (2.0GHz quad core i7, 4GB RAM, dual hard drives, etc.)

So can either of you guys help me update Flash? I go to a site, like nhl.com, which has videos. When I click on a video it says I'm missing plug-in. So I download the latest version of Flash.
Note: I've tried this in both Safari and Firefox.
When I go to install the update, I receive an error message that tells me I need the Adobe Application Manager to update my product, so I download the Adobe Application Manager and install it. Once it is complete, I go back to try and re-install Flash. This time, I get an error message that reads Update Failed - Updates could not be applied. The patch is not applicable for you.
Thoughts?

In "utilities" you could move all traces of Adobe to the trash. Restart your Mac then try the install/update again of Adobe.
In some cases, a conflict might occurr with older versions of Adobe.

Thanks for the tip. Mine is running at 2.73%, but good to know. My Fiance's Macbook just crapped out on us, so we might be looking into a new computer. Not too happy about it since it's basically a $1500 Facebook machine.

Before you decide to pull the plug on the "wifey to be" Mac, try the following...that is if it's still somewhat functional.
Open "APPLICATIONS"
Click on "UTILITIES" folder
Click on "DISK UTILITY" icon
After a few seconds of "gathering information", click on your HD. Should be "Macintosh HD".
At the bottom you'll see "Verify Disk Permissions", click that and let it do it's thing.
After that's done, click "Repair Disk Permission", again wait for it to finish then click "Repair Disk".
Hopefully after all that she'll be up and running.
Has she or you done all "updates"?

Thanks for the advice. Well right after I wrote that post I turned her computer on once more. I started up, but was running slow. I checked on what 4runnin mentioned about, but it was fine. Apparently the last time she turned it on it had a folder with an exclamation mark flashing. I didn't check it out myself since we were getting ready for a trip, but it worked last night.

We have updated all "updates", but that is where our problems started. She can't watch any videos at all even though the latest version of Flash is installed. Also iTunes was one of the updates and now it won't open. Any ideas?

I think if her computer eventually dies I may just get an iPad and she can have my computer. No need to have two laptops if I really only use mine for cruising the internet now. Plus they are $1k cheaper.

Just re-image the Macbook. It is SUPER F'n easy.

Do you have the original OS disk?

If not then buy OS-X Snow Leopard FULL version DVD disk from Apple for $29.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

Insert DVD.
Format disk (might want to backup first)
Install onto newly formatted partition.
Enjoy.

What Brian said; on pretty much EVERY computer I have, I'll back up my stuff and then reimage it every year or so.
