So, we all knew this day would come, there have always been little viruses around for mac but they have mostly been pretty harmless and hard to install. Then when installed they haven't done much.

Just want everyone to be on their toes, This one is much easier to get.

my lady has a mac book. I've had trouble getting free online virus scanners to work. Anybody know of any?

I've used symantec, mcaffe and trend micro(house call) sometimes they work, sometimes not.

Are those links you posted legit?
 
we actually just switched to eset here at work. Been running symantec forever. does eset have a free online scanner? I don't want to install another program on her machine making it slower.

edit: even though eset does have a small footprint, and runs way faster on our win 7 boxes than symantec ever did!
 
make sure your school's network is capable of working with lion. there have been problems with wifi and lion. lots of problems.
 
Where does everyone get all these viruses?

I haven't used virus protection since '07 and never have problems. I have a mac now, but was all pc before '09 and I download a lot.


And Lion SUCKS, Safari PDF compatibility issues, wi-fi connectivity issues, java problems. And now they're releasing Mountain Lion without even fixing Lion first. If they'd do it like MS and release new OSes every year or so instead of every 6 months maybe they could solve these problems.

Flashback is technically a trojan—not a virus. it showed up last year masquerading as an Adobe Flash installer/updater (surprise, surprise) but the new version that has everyone's knickers in a twist (and the AntiVirus companies opportunistically soiling their trousers at the chance to make some headway in the Mac market) exploits a Java vulnerability that Apple (shamefully) took months to update and lock down.

OS X's UNIX foundation really does provide a good basis for security, but there're always going to be chinks in the armor; social engineering that exploits inexperienced users all the more so. in response Apple is rolling out stronger application sandboxing for the Mac with Gatekeeper in upcoming Mountain Lion.

while i don't disagree that Lion has its problems, Mountain Lion is intended to "fix" Lion in the same way that Snow Leopard "fixed" Leopard before it.

also:
1) Apple does not release a new OS "every 6 months"... they are, in fact, moving to a yearly OS X update cycle

2) suggesting that Apple "do it like MS" sounds like some patently bad advice to me.

LoL dude. You are part of the problem, no offense but you really dont know what you are talking about.

Most viruses or trojens don't crash your computer. You probably have viruses on any PC that is unprotected. The intruding software can wait silently, stealing credit card info and sending it back to the creators. Also the PC/Mac can be taken over with a signal from botnet owners but lie dormant for years/months.

Now if the MAC users would stop granting permission to the fake update pop up box, that would slow the spread significantly. Unfortunately a ton of Mac users have no idea about computer hardware / computer science. just like PC users and they see a "xxxx update needs administrative permission, click ok to continue" they click and now the virus / trojan has unix admin rights.

Ur not a tech person I assume ....

You want Mac's to be safe? Quit buying apple products, you push them over the 15% market share and a lot more people are going to make malicious software for it
 
So far little to no issues, and when I see that lil update window I make sure it's via my System Updater not via the program itself, other than most Adobe products carry their own updaters.

Also no issues on my end w/ Lion, so I don't get the reason why people are whining about it soo much.
