MAF - Clean it if you haven't - you'll be glad you did

Yeah, yeah - I've seen it suggested on this board 100 times to clean your MAF and I'm almost embarrassed to say I've not cleaned mine before. I guess it's possible that at some point during a maintenance at the shop it's been cleaned - but it's also possible that mine had never been cleaned (167K miles)

I can't get over what an improvement cleaning that thing has caused. The 4Runner runs quieter and smoother than it has in a long time. I was surprised to pull it out and discover how dirty it actually was. A couple sprays of MAF cleaner and back together in under 30 minutes.

Results may very - but if you haven't done this simple task, I highly suggest you do.

10mm socket and extention to remove the 3 bolts on the whatever that thing is that's in the way of accessing the 2 phillips screws that hold the MAF in place.

Be sure to clean the obvious metal sensor and then also the 2 wires hidden inside - be careful to avoid the O-ring.

Used: CRC 05110 Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner - 11 Wt Oz. that I was able to order from Amazon

Well now you know!. Its a special cleaner for the throttle body too, and special cleaner for electrical wiring and the electrical plug too.

I finally stripped the screws on mine last night. You are supposed to use those special Japanese JIS screwdrivers on them. Managed to get them out after a while with a screw extractor. Replaced with hex cap M4x10mm screws. The o-ring part number is 90099-14141.

Buy the specific cleaner. A can costs around $4 at walmart and will last a few years. And you don't risk ruining an $80+ MAF.

For what it's worth, it seems a lot of Toyotas use the same MAF. I just put my spare '99 T4R MAF in my wife's '03 Rav4 with a 2.0L i4 and it fixed her P0171 code. Interchangeable parts are nice, especially when junkyard hunting.
