Magnuson Supercharger Smooth Roller Pulley Fail!

Luckily it didn't take out anything else. It was the lower smooth roller pulley that disintegrated, and it happened on the trail! I noticed the trans wasn't shifting per usual and just a general loss of power BUT i was on the trail ALL day that day so it wasn't noticeable until we started climbing out of the valley we were in. We had pulled in to our last camp spot for the weekend and I decided to pop the hood and saw that the belt was loose! Cut the belt out and was able to gingerly drive it home, even on the highway over a mountain pass.

Was able to source the pulleys locally at Napa and another parts store, each had one in stock so ordered the other two and extras which should be here tomorrow morning. Up and running again soon.

I've had my SC in for just under 60k miles

Smooth pulleys (2) Napa 38006
Ribbed pulleys (2) Dayco 89009
Will find tensioner later and carry as an extra. Also ordered another extra belt.

Wow. That sucks. I had a 2006 Tacoma before with the TRD blower. I had to replace the pulley bearings twice within about 50K miles. It didn't get as bad as yours did. I would replace them because I would notice the pulley squealing, and you could feel the bearing going bad when spinning it by hand. Did you notice any squealing noise before it totally blew up like that ?

I'd have to look back through the old threads, but one person was having bad issues of belt flutter, and Magnuson and the shop that did the install were both saying "it's within spec."

He even uploaded vids, and it was bad. Wouldn't be surprised a bad batch of parts when out. Might want to reach out to that guy with the thread and see/tell him what's up.

I actually did notice a noise while we were out that day, it's even noticeable in the vids I took. At the time I didn't really think anything of it other than it was the hottest day so far as we get more into summer so maybe the SC whine was louder.

The pulleys that Magnuson use in their kits are used in 100s of other applications if you look up the part numbers I provided, it wasn't the supercharger at all. I've always suspected that the factories that make these mass applications pulleys use the bare minimum, or even less if they're sneaky, amount of grease. Like I said these pulleys have almost 50k miles on them and the lower one is probably soaked in water weekly and then gets hot, repeat, so I'm not surprised that it failed. Lesson to me is to carry an extra of each pulley. I already carry an extra SC belt but I guess that wasn't enough. Lesson learned and am happy I didn't have to call AAA on the trail!

IIRC Magnuson or TVS made the superchargers for the earlier factory installed cars so I would suspect the pulleys for those had a Toyota P/N and were more reliable.

Yeah he reached out to me via PM a while back. Last message was that he was having Toyota warranty the crank pulley to see if that would help, and that Magnuson has been horrible at helping

Were the pulleys hard to remove?? When I was installing mine they felt very tight as if they were being pressed in.

I have taken those idler pulleys apart and replaced the bearing grease with Mobil 1 synthetic.
It looks like the water, mud dirt got the best of the bearing and it lost its grease and seized up.
