The maintenance light is merely a mileage based reminder light, flashing for a few seconds at 4500 miles since the last reset and lit solid after 5000 miles. It doesn't monitor engine run time like GMs or have a sensor to determine oil quality.
I reset mine the first instance it starts to bling, so it doesn't annoy me. To reset it, set the display to odometer first (if it isn't already and turn the key back to 'Lock' or 'Acc'. Hold down the switch that toggles between the two tripometers and odometer. While holding down the switch turn the key to 'On'. The odometer display will display a series of dashes and the will disappear one by one and the Maintenance light will flash a couple times to indicate the reset has been done. The process takes less than 10 seconds to complete.
