I just bought a 04 limited 4runner. Awesome car, but that is for another post.

I've driven less that 1,000 miles and the "MAINT" light came on.

I did some searches on here. Most people said that this light is ONLY for oil change reminder.

The reason I am posting....I still have warranty and can get a repair if needed.

Can someone verify for sure....the MAINT light is ONLY for oil changes.

Thanks in advance for assuaging my concerns.

My vote is oil change. I believe it goes on automatically after 5000 miles. A simple reset-directions are on here BUTT do you need an oil change????
Unless previous owner did an oil change right before you bought it I'd do one. Better safe than oh crap!
Enjoy the thousands of miles you drive on your 4Runner.

The manual says, oil change...but as you said it...I am trying to avoid the "OH CRAP" later....checking just to be sure.

Yep, the maint light indicates its time for an oil change (based strictly on mileage, it may have just been changed and just not reset). I can't recall the exact procedure, but I believe you turn ignition on, switch to odometer. Turn ignition off, press and hold reset, and turn ignition back to the on position.

Copied from a previous post. Found this to be very helpful. I printed it out and left it in my glovebox.

TSB EL002-03 has these instructions:

1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:

i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off

6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.

Unlike some other car manufacturers Toyota's Maintenance Lights are simple pre-set odometer trips. They set every 5k and are to help the owner keep track of when the next recommended service is.
