Maintenance at 160k

Hey folks,

Just about to hit the 160k mark on my 99 and wanted to know what things should I consider doing or even have a look over on to continue the life of my runner running healthy and strong.

I really haven't done much to it but change the oil, rebuild the starter and change out the fuel injector (which went out last month).

Thanks in advanced!

Thanks Man! I'll get started with this. With the radiator, should I drain and fill or change out the core? I was also wondering about any of the filters like the fuel and trans filter. When do these thing need to be changed?

The whole radiator for sure. It is cheap insurance against a known radiator failure that causes coolant to get into your transmission.

Also, timing belt if it hasn't been done, which would lead me to water pump, cam/crank seals, and possibly the oil pump as well (failure of the oil pump is rare, but it is another line of insurance against catastrophic failure).

Also, fuel pump. Failures around 200k don't seem uncommon. No harm will come if it goes out, but getting stranded is not an option for me so I'll be replacing mine at 150k (where it will be 17 years old...).

That reminds me. I will probably do the fan clutch as well.

Thank you sir! I will consider this all and get to it. Seems like I'll be having a few weekends full of fun!

Any recs on a good long lasting radiator or should I still with an OEM one?

This is a good list, but what is meant by 'heater core valve'? The valve on the firewall in the engine compartment?
Radiator: I got an OEM radiator for $207(5 years ago); I think I read here that they are cheaper now. Easy to change. Do the 3 belts and hoses at the same time.

Yeah, I looked up heater core valve and it looks like the one on the firewall unless boss can clarify.

Looks easy to change out the rad.

Good choice on the radiator. I went with a pretty cheap one, under the expectation that Id replace them every 90k with the TBs. But, a nice all-metal one is probably better, especially for rough use.

Oh, and yup! My heater core valve wouldnt open this winter until I popped the hood and fiddled with it manually using some pliers!

I'll add that to my to-do list as well :D .

As to fluid quality, I am a fan of synthetics, but replacement frequency is more important than anything.

I would not touch the fuel pump or the oil pump. I've replaced a fuel pump and it's not an easy task due to having to completely drop the tank. They easily go 250k miles and beyond on the same original one. The oil pump is even more difficult, and I've never heard of a 5VZ-FE engine die due to a failed oil pump, ever.

Keep all your fluids fresh, including your differential oil. All that will help everything work as it should. I'm also a fan of synthetics, I recently put synthetic transmission fluid (Royal Purple) and it shifts so smooth now. Synthetic engine oil normally lasts longer so you don't have to change the oil as much.

Keeping your suspension fresh will also save your tires from wearing un-evenly. If the coils and/or shocks are getting real bouncy and springy, replace them. Your tires will thank you.

Also, replace those aging sway bar bushings and end link bushings to eliminate body roll.

Thanks! I watched a vid about those swaybar bushings way back when. Thanka for reminding me.

Just check the radiator before replacing it. If there's pink coolant in it then chances are its been taken care of. If its got any green stuff (all makes & models crap) in it, get it out right away, flush the system if you want, but get the pink Toyota coolant in there. Also, if the radiator has any brownish areas (mine has some on top when you first look at the engine) those are signs of fatigue and it'd probably be a good idea to change it in the near future.
