Maintenance Intervals

Hello all,

This is my first post so I hope I do this right. I checked through the threads before starting this one and didn't find what I was looking for. My apologies if I overlooked it. My question is this: I have a 2004 4Runner SR5 V8. At 100k miles I had the timing belt, water pump and spark plugs replaced. Last week I took it to the dealership (I know ... I know) for an oil change. The service tech told me that "my model needs spark plugs / tune up every 35k miles". Am I missing something??? Any help /advise you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

As far as I know the v8's use iridium plugs which are good for 100k. I'm assuming that they replaced the plugs with iridium, in which case they would be good for 100k.

Good on you for doing the timing belt.

:welcome: where in NJ are you?

Hi Zak,

Thanks for the welcome. To be honest I don't know if the dealership used iridium plugs. Is there anyway to tell? Maybe calling the service dept. and asking them? Yea, I had them do the timing belt a 100k; I must admit, that service hurt $$$. I'm just over the BF Bridge. Mike

I suppose the only way would be to take them out and inspect them. You should be able to look at the receipt maybe if it has the parts itemized?

Hey Zak,

I just found my receipt and they are iridium plugs so they should be good for about 100k miles. Thanks again for your help.

Yep anytime. We have an offroading thread for the SNJ area here:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-roading/131159-pine-barrens-nj-wheeling-meet-ups.html

if you're interested in joining one of the trips - the invitation is always out there - they're a blast. My truck was stock last pines trip I made and I can't wait to get out there again with the lift and all my new toys.

Just out of curiosity, what did the dealership charge you for a timing belt replacement?

HOLY CRAP ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just though I would go ahead and get my response to your answer out of the way.

X2 on this - I need to get mine done and as much as I toy with the idea of doing it myself, there isn't a chance I'll actually do it.

$1200 here in Massachusetts..... Quoted three dealers and they all came up about the same.... I have a V8 so it was the usual 90K service of timing belt, water pump, pulley/tensioners etc

Now I know why they are referred to as "stealerships" ...

Where do you get your work done?

I used to get my work done at the Toyota Dealer in Marlton, NJ, but now I looking for someplace else. After they told me that "my model needs spark plugs / tune up every 35k miles" I'm done with them .... Where do you get your work done?

Lol good call.

For most things, anywhere I can find parking on 41st Street!

For things I can't handle my truck used to go to STS in montclair where my parents live, but no more. I'm shopping around for a new dealer or shop to go to.
